SALVIDERE HAS BEEN INSURED FOR 0,000. Champion Two-year-old of 1906 Will Be Wintered at Hamburg Place. New York, September 24. Salvidere haa been insured for- 0,000 and will in due time be sent to Kentucky to winter at John E. Maddens Hamburg Place. Since he haa earned the title two-year-old champion of 1906, It is a matter of general regret among horsemen that this upstanding son of Belvl-dere and Sallic of Navarre is. not an entire horse. Salvidere was foaled at the Senorita Farm of the late Captain S. S. Brown and, as has been told In the columns of Daily Racing Form, was the result of a mating intended to produce a winner of the Saratoga Special, though Captain Brown did not live to see the fulfillment of his efforts in that direction. It was not the original intention to alter Salvidere. The operation was, it has been related by trainer Bob Tucker, his first handler, a. matter ot necessity. That Tucker did not have a correct idea of the quality of Salvidere is now evident, otherwise he would not have permitted the gelding to pass into other bands. Salvidere ran one race in the colors of Captain W. , Harry Brown, who came into possession of his deceased brothers racing establishment, and: that wiis the only race for which he was handled by Tucker aud .the only race in which he -was defeated. It-was in bis first start, made in an allowance race at Brighton Beach July 14. Salvidere got away poorly, was shut off early and closing a, big gap, he was beaten out only three parts of a length by Fountalublue in a terrific drive. John E. Madden saw that race and then and there made up his mind that Salvidere was a horse he wanted. Captain Harry Brown had announced a sale of horses in training for the. following Saturday. July. 21, and Sidvldere was among those named to go under the hammer. Madden got him for ,700, the purchase, being made In the name of Thomas Hitchcock, Jr.. In the Racing Calendar of July 25 it was reported that Messrs. Hitchcock aud Madden had registered a partnership in the gelding, each owning one-half. In the Hitchcock colors Salvidere has taken six-successive stakes and brought his present owners 0,8S5 iu cash and gold plate. His one second hi the colors of Captain Brown netted hiin 00,- so that his winnings for seven races foot up 1,085. The first of his stake victories was the Montauk at Brighton Beach, July 25, three-quarters of a mile in 1:13b, carrying 100 pounds. His next was the Brighton Junior at Brighton Beach, July 28, three-quarters of a mile in 1:13s, with 119 pounds up Then came the Winged Foot Handicap at Brighton Beach August 4, three-quarters of a mile over the muddy track with 120 pounds up in 1:13. This was followed by the Saratoga Special at Saratoga, August 10, "three-quarters of . a mile-in 1:12s, carrying 119 -pounds. His next triumph was in the Adirondack Handicap at Saratoga, August -29,- three-quarters of a mile in 1:14, with 128 pounds np. His next and lust was the Junior. Champion at Gravesend Saturday, when he raii the about three-quarters of a mile course in 1:10, with 124 pounds up,.. it being muddy. Salvidere has not only beaten the best horses of his ,age,. but he has done it in the most convincing manner, clearly establishing the fact that the state of the track makes little difference to him. He appears to be as good in the mud as he is on the dry. .He is, it has been stated, not a perfectly sound horse, however. The likelihood of the giving away of one fore leg is the one thing that his owners liave to fear for the future. If this does not happen withiug the coming year, it Is the opinion among horsemen of the east that he will prove to be the champion three-year-old of 1907. "After Salvideres signal victory Saturday, there was no longer any doubt as to his right to the title of champion," says the New York Sun. "Not a turfman could be found who did not join in the general praise of this remarkable young racehorse. " He is a second Hamburg, said Dave Johnson. Who can beat him next year? The way he collared De Mund when the latter was at his best showed us that Madden has the best two-year-old that has been to the races in many seasons. " I think Salvidere, barring Sysouby, said Senator McCarreu, is the best two-year-old since "Hamburgs time. He impressed me the first time I saw him run and I have bet on him in all of his races. "He is not only a typical racehorse with a wonderful turn of speed, but he Is also a bulldog and has a heart of steel. He will make a great three-year-old. " There should be no longer any doubt about Salvideres real worth, was the way John E. Madden put It. He met the best two-year-olds hi training and beat them easily. He has done all that has been asked of him and is entitled td a " rest. "
