TEN DAYS REST FOR HIS ROUGH .RIDING. Wishard Causes a Jam at Churchill Downs Nicol Rides at Illegal Oversight. Louisville, Ky., October 2. Martha Gorman and Tom Dolan were the only winning favorites at Churchill Downs today. Both were at short prices and race-goers profited little by their victories. The feature race, a steeplechase handicap over -the short course, brought together an even dozen that furnished a spectacular contest, ten of the. number going over the course in safety. Gus Lanka and Gould came to grief. The former, ridden by F. Morris, was a close contender when approaching the sixth jump where he fell. The rider sustained a fracture of the collarbone. McClure seemed to have rolled off Gould before reaching the first jump. The winner turned; up In Maverick, which showed a-good-performance, --. i.- wnwr - : In the closing race, in front of the grandstand, there was a jam caused by Wishard, on Gauze, steering his monnt for the inner rail. Bralt, ridden by J. Carroll, was caught iii the wedge and the boy swept from the saddle. He clung to the bridle reins and bung dangling in front of the horse for nearly seventy yards before the equipment broke, throwing him to the ground. He was unhurt. Jockey Wishard was fined 0 and suspended for ten days by the judges for having caused the mishap. The legal overweight is five pounds, but jockey Nicol had six and one-half pounds over on Belden In the closing race, ne weighed out at 10S. The horses original weight was 102, but on weighing in Nicol declared four pounds over. In some manner he took on an extra pound -and a half. The judges fined him 5 for his carelessness. In addition, he was fined 5 by the starter while at the post for misbehavior in the first race. J An unwieldy field faced the starter In the opening race.
