At the age of fifteen he entered the employ of Kobert Holloway as an employe in- the old Turf Exchange poolroom. He ttpveloped superior judgment in the selection of winning horses and before he had attained his majority he had amassed a fortune and was making book on the tracks. Then he became an owner, among his horses being Meckie H., Sweet Blossom and liclipsc, the latter one of the stars of the old Guttcnberg track. It was while Shannon owned Meckie A. that "William McGuigan was ruled off the turf on a charge of having her pulled in the first heat of a race against Josie O. Shannon went before the judges after that heat and complained against his trainer. The jockey received positive Instructions from the officials, with the result that Meekio H. won and McGuigan was banished. Shannon put his fnoncy into real estate, the principal property lelng Hollywood Farm. About four years ago he was compelled to abandon his business and went to Arizona in the hope that he would recover his health. He made the move too late.
