HEAL TOUCH OF . WINTER AT ZOUISVILLE. Talent, However, Has a Good Day from a Speculative Angle Pat Dunne Wins Two Races, Louisville, Ky., October 10. With a, temperature around 35 degrees and snow flakes scurrying through the air at intervals, Churchill Downs patrons had a real touch of winter today. In spite of the biting cold, the attendance was good and eighteen books accepted positions in the ring. The program offered . tempting spots where It looked as though safe bets might be made, and with three favorites Airship, Auditor and Golden Mineral and three well-backed second choices Envoy, Bitter Miss and Dr. Keith-landing in front, the crowd had all the best of it in the contest with the layers. A condition purse at a mile and a sixteenth, in which speed -was well represented, and a steeplechase over the full course were the features: For the former Princess Orna was the opening . choice, but receded in the betting on account of donbt as to Austins ability to ride to his -best form. Envoy and Mcllvain fought it out the former winning. Pontotoc, making his first start in a long time, showed speed in the race and Is rounding into form. In the. steeplechase St Yolma, the heavily backed choice, unshipped his rider; Cunningham, at the third jump and Nlnepln, ridden, by Hughes, fell at the- second. John Dillon showed ijie most early speed, but the long course proved to be too much for him and Dr. Keith beat him easily. Pat Duune scored his first successes of the meeting when Airship and Envoy were returned easy winners. Both were strongly backed. J. C. Calms Bitter Miss led from end to end in the three-quarter race. There was a bad mlxup-at the three furlongs post that put Redgauntlet out of business so far as first- money- was concerned. The colt apparently jumped on Sister nuffman, for the latter was badly cut down.. E. A. Chinri and. Co lost Ireland this morning; The ior.se died"Hdf jluhg Sam and Ed.jWagner; both will remain for several days. For yjsobedlence at the post jockey Wylie was suspended for six days by the starter. For a similar offense Lloyd will be kept oh the ground for three days. Jockey D. Austin was -fined 5 by the judges for cutting across in front in the third race shortly after -the start. Barkelmore broke down In his last start and will be retired. J. C. Ferriss, Jr., will handle the horses of George Borkel this winter. Among them are Prince Silver-wings and Jessamy.
