URGES HOME RULE FOR. CANADIAN RACING. Toronto Sunday World Says a. Canadian Jockey Club Has Become an Absolute. Necessity, "The opening of the new .track , at Montreal marks another anil a definite era in Canada," says the Toronto Sunday Worlds- racing critic. "It also emphasizes the need of a purely Canadian Jockey Club . to regulate dates and to control things generally, for with Toronto, Hamilton, Fort-Erie, Windsor, Quebec and other places clamoring for dates twice a year, all between May 20 and October 15, something will have to be done to -avoid clashing with each otlier, to say nothing of the meetings at Buffalo and Saratoga, where there will necessarily be horses that would cross the border if the dates suited. There are 120 days allowed for between .the two dates, which, allowing for traveling, would be pretty well absorbed if Toronto took twenty, Hamilton twenty, Montreal twenty-six, Fort Erie thirty, Windsor fifteen, and Quebec and . other places tliat might arise to claim dates the balance. It is not, however, so much the total allotment of dates that will puzzle the wise heads as the allotment in the season of the year, Montreal -.will want some of the summer season,, bnti if Toronto takes thirteen days, Hamilton eleven,. and Fort Erie thirty, leaving Windsor for the: back-end of" sum. ! mer, Montreal would have no chance until the last half of July comes. arcOTdrand Saiaioffa.: la at hand. Both Buffalo -astfiandrafc have to be clashed with, but as that is unavoidable the difficulty will have to be met. It will be another and far more serious thing If our own dates dash. Thus, as I have said, a Canadian Jockey CInb has become an absolute secessltyi and I trust will be brought into active existence during the approaching winter. Executives of clubs can take my word for it that the knowledge that our rules are not made by aliens, nor altogether carried into effect by them, will go a long way towards reconciling the people with the pport and Its connections.
