PIMLICO RACING IS WELL PATRONIZED. ICoerners Followers Come to Grief Dr. McCann Defeats Palm in the Steeplechase. Baltimore, Md., November 2. Despite the fact the card run off at PImlico this afternoon was far from being a good one, a big crowd was in attend-nnee and It was a betting aggregation. WIten the horses went to the post for the opening race there was not more than about fifteen hundred people on the grounds. However, the Baltimore people are hIow in getting to the races, but they invariably get In on time for the steeplechases so that about the third race the crowd had increased to about four thousand. The track was in good condition. It was thought that with the glamor of the first day gone that there might be a. wholesale desertion of the books but such was not the case. In fact, when the layers drew in there were twenty-eeven of Ihcm and all had plenty to do. The most interesting race was the steeplechase for three-year-olds. It brought together the two good colts, Palm and Mr. McCann and it resulted in an excellent race. The pair were not more than two lengths apart at any stage of the journey and the result was in doubt until in the last three furlongs. Palm outjumped his opponent, but the latter had the most speed between Jumps and after clearing the last obstacle, Mr. McCann out-footed him in the run to the finish. In the metropolitan district the public generally loses when Miller cannot land winners and the same; thing la sure to happen at this course. Koerners three winners on the opening day has brought the public support to his mounts and the result is that the bookies are using the lads reputation to lay prices on horses that are far from . what they, should be. He had mounts on Brit tanby, Hyperion and Graziallo,. but he did not land one of them a winner. Both Brlttanby and Hyperion wero heavily backed, especially the latter. There was n big delegation of Virginians here. On trainer .Billy, Garths advice, they went to the Bassetlaw gelding, as- if the race was already over. After racing well for six furlongs, Hyperion tired and at. the ,end was not in the money. The track was in good condition, having .dried out well. As a result the racing-was much, better than was expected. The ra.qes-resul fed disastrously for the favorites, for Welbourne at- .even money and Mr. McCann at odds-on, were the. only ones to win. Willie Shields made an auspicious beginning. He had Beldemo in the first race and he backed the Wilson cast-off heavily.. Noone rode one of the best races that he has shown in some time anil saving ground on. the home turn, brought the colt home a handy winner. Shields then, received several offers for the youngster and will likely part with him.
