THREE CHAMPIONS OF OTHER DAYS. Foxhall, foaled in 1378, never raced in America, but was shipped to England when a.yearling. At two years old he made his debut at the Newmarket Second October meeting In the- Bedford Stakes, five furlongs, defeating Myra, Ishmaol and Mynheer. Same meeting was second ia the Ashley Sweepstakes, five furlongs, to Savoyard, beating Simnel, Lamprey and Montgorarle. Newmarket Houghton meeting wori the Bretby Nursery Handicap Plate, five .furlongs, defeating Heyday,- the favorite, to jwhonijjie gave twenty -four. pounds; Accelerato, and "fifteen others. Whentt7ree"yefars eld was second" to the Derby winner Bend Or 4 In the City and Suburban Handicap,, one and one-quarter miles, with Post Obit, Peter, Prestonpans, Petronel and seventeen others behind hliii. He then crossed the Channel and won the Grand Prix de Paris, defeating Tristan, Albion, Fiddler and six others. He was returned to England and without a gallop started In the Ascot Gold Cup, won by Rolcrt the Devil, Fox-hall, the only three-year-old in the race, falling to get a place. Newmarket First October meeting won the Grand Duke Michael Stakes, one mile, two furlongs and seventy-three yards, defeating Don Fulano, Ishmael and Maskelyne. Second October meeting won the Cesarewltch Stakes Handicap two miles, two furlongs and twenty-eight yards, carrying 110 pounds, defeating Chippendale, Fiddler, Petronel and fifteen others. Won the Select Stakes, for three-year-olds, Rowley Mile, defeating Tristan and Maskelyne. Houghton meeting Foxhall 3 won the Cambridgeshire Stakes Handicap one and one-quarter miles, carrying 126 pounds, from Lucy Glitters 3 91 pounds, second; Tristan 3 107 pounds, third; Peter 5 140 pounds; Bend Or 4 134 pounds, and twenty-seven others. Foxhall had up the highest weight ever carried successfully by a three-year-old in this race, and It is probable no three-year-old ever ran a better race. He won the Ascot Gold Cup as a four-year-old, and started next day in the Alexandra Plate. He was not In condition and was defeated by Fiddler by Preakness, a sou of Lexington whom he had beaten several times, and this ended his racing career. The famous English trainer, William Day, spoke of him as the best horse he had ever handled, and John Porter, of Klngsclere, trainer of Ormonde, Flying Fox and Persimmon, names Foxhall as one of the ten best horses he ever saw. Hindoo, by Virgil, dam Florence, by Lexington, foaled In 1S78, was in some respects a better racehorse than Luke Blackburn, as he was a first-class two-year-old, winning seven of his nine starts. Hindoo won the Colt and Filly Stakes at Lexington, the Alexander and Tennessee Stakes at Louisville, the Juvenile and Jockey Club Stakes one mile for two-year-olds at St. IxmTsT the Criterion at Chicago, three-fourths mile In i:15; which was the fastest three-quarters ever run by a. two-year-old to that date, and at Gravesend won the Tremont Stakes, one mile. After the latter race he changed hands and at Saratoga ran third to Crickmore and Bonnie Lizzie in the Windsor Hotel Stakes, with Thora and four others behind him, and In the Day Boat Line Stakes finished second to Thora, In front of Bonnie Lizzie and three others. Hindoo won eighteen out of twenty starts as a three-year-old, including the Blue Ribbon Stakes at Lexington, the Kentucky Derby and Olark Stakes at Louisville, the Tidal Stakes and Coney Island Derby at Sheepshead Bay, at Monmouth Park, the Ocean, Lorillard and Champion Stakes and Jersey St. Leger, and at Saratoga, the Travers, Sequel, United States Hotel, and Kcnner Stakes. He ran second in the Brighton Beach Purse and third in the September Handicap,, both of which races were won-by Crickmore. . Hindoo won five out of six starts as a four-year-old.. At Louisville, won the Cup, the Merchants and the Turf Stakes; at Sheepshead Bay, won the Coney Island Stakes and Coney Island. Cup. As a three and four-year-old, Hindoo defeated all of the best horses of his day, including Bend Or, Creosote, Getaway, Lelex, Alfambra, Bootjack, Thora, Sir Hugh, Jack of Hearts, Crickmore, Sauuterer, Monitor, Olldella, Eole, Compensation, .Greenland, Parole, Checkmate, Runuyuieade, etc. Crickmore beat him when not at his best, but he beat Crickmore three times. Colonel S. D. Bruce, author of the American Stud Book, said: "Hindoo was the best racehorse which has appeared in this country for more than a decade, and It is doubtful if any horse in England could have beaten him in the great classic events." In the stud Hindoo got Hanover, nert to Lexington the best of American sires. Salvator, by Prince Charlie, dam Salina, by Lexington, was foaled in 18S6. At two years old, he won four out of six starts;- ran .second to Proctor Knott in the first Futurity Stakes; won -the Flat-bush and Maple Stakes, at Sheepshead Bay; the Tuckahoe and Titan Stakes at Jerome Park. When three years old, Salvator won seven out of eight races in which he started, that is the Tidal; Realization, one and five-eighth miles,, Tenny, Long Dance, Longstreet and five others being behind him; the Lorillard, one and one-half miles, with 118 pounds up defeating Longstreet, Faverdale colt, .and five others; was third to Longstreet, 118, and Proctor Knott, 120, In the Omnibus Stakes, one and one-halfmlles, Salvator carrying-125 pounds and finishing in front of four others; won the Jersey Handicap, one and one-quarter miles, 124 pounds, In front of nine others; won the September Stakes, one and three-quarter miles, 129 pounds, beating J. A. B. and Sorrento; won a sweepstakes, one and one-sixteenth miles, and a purse, one and one-sixteenth miles. As a four-year-old, he won all of his five starts. In the Suburban Handicap, one and one-quarter miles, 127 pounds, he beat probably the best field which ever started for this event, that ia Casslus, 107 pounds, second; Tenny, 126 pounds, third; Reclare, Prince Royal, Longstreet, FIrenze, Raceland, and others; won the match against Tenny, each carrying 122 pounds, one and one-quarter miles, In 2:05; walked over for the Monmouth Cup, one and three-quarter miles; won the Champion Stakes, one and one-half miles, beating Tenny, each carrying 122 pounds; won purse of ,500, one mile, to beat the best time on record, 1:39, carrying 110 pounds, going the distance in l:35i.
