The bookmakers Avere given a severe drubbing at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. Four heavily backed favorites re-Avarded the confidence of the public while the winners of the other two races Avere extensively supported by a party of sharpshooters. Especially av.is this true of Gladiator. His backers secured as good as G to 1 at the opening of the betting. St. Valentine, a locally owned horse, took the feature race in a spectacular contest through the stretcu Avith Jack Dolan. The latter Avas a slight favorite over the winner, but St. Valentine probably carried the most money. He was a good horse today. After waiting on the pace set by Dr. Spruill for the first three-quarters of a mile, passed him in a flash and standing a final drive gamely, outlasted Jack Dolan. Jockey Nicols followers opened the day auspiciously. He rode Buren Arnold and Whippoorvvill to handy victories. The easterners failed to land a purse until Glamor sprcadeagled her opponents and won the fifth race pulling up. Colonel Bartletts victory in the closing race cost his owner the purse, Sam Louis bidding him. up .00 over his entered price of 00. He Avas retained. Announcement was made that jockey Hogg, whose license Avas held up pending further investigation as the Jockey Clubs refusal to permit the youngster to ride at Baltimore, would le permitted to accept mounts here.
