BEN STR0ME SEVENTH IN THE LIST. Ben Stroim- is a bay horse bred in England by the Duke of Westminster. He was foaled in 18M and brought to this country in UB2. His racing credentials in England were respectable, hut nw more Am the proper ti el Waleotl a Campbell he ran in fixe races in this country in 18S2, without winning or being placed, but he showed considerable s]ieed in the beat of company. Being then six years old little in the racing line was to lie expected of him, but his excellent breeding pointed to that great measure of success in the stud that lias since fallen to hiui. a ■apreeeatsjUaa of tha potent stela line that in its best development reads. Stockwell. Doncaster, Bend or. Ormonde. Orme. Plying Pox, It would be some cause for wonder if he had not proved a successful sire. He is by Bend Or — Stratli-tleet. The letter was a daughter of Scottish Chief and was herself, a crack filly in her txxo and three-year-old racing form. In all respects lien Strome is. in right of his sire and his dam. one of the best bred horses that ever left England. Sent to the stud in UN he xvas first represented on the turf of this country in 18! 7. His progeny began winning at once and have kept the custom in active evidence ever since. For some years it was the fashion to assert the Ben Stromes were only sprinters, hut such stayers as Highball and Eugenia Bnreh put that misplaced notion into oblivion. Extreme spted is usually devoted to sprint racing because of the quickly recurring opportunities for action and profit, and extreme speed is such a inaiked characteristic of the progeny of Ben Strome. that many of the most famous sprinters of the past eight years have been by him. including tlie peerless Bosehen. With txxo such flyers out in ills first year as Keiimorc Queen and Lady Irene, the Ben Stromes instantly became popular and his progress in the sire list figures steadily mounted up until in IMS he came out at the head of the American stallion list with a total to his credit of S108JM5, to which Highball xvas his principal contributor. His progeny won even more in 1004, but it only sufficed to give him third place in the sire list. In ISM he finished fifth in the list and his place in IBM was sexenth with a total of fBS.161 to which his sons and daughters contributed as follows: BEN STROME. b. h.
