UNSATISFACTORY RACING. BEN BAN. AN OUTSIDER. WINS THE TOBOGGAN HANDICAP. |—- Smoker Takes the Juvenile Stakes — Good and Plenty Gets Stuck In a Bog and Is Beaten by Coligny. New York. May 11. — The Umax of unsatisfactory racing was reached today at Belmont Park when Good and Plenty, the best steeplechaser of his time, If not the hest ever seen In this country, was defeated in an overnight jumping nee at two miles. Coligny, from the bam of J. K. Widener, which has lH en chasing Good and Plenty for two years, was his conqueror, but there was an excuse to offer tor Wood and Plenty. In the approach In the jump in the middle of the big turn, there is a bad place in the course which the recent rains had reduced to a bog and in the last time around Good and Plenty got into this soft spot and stuck there, lie was leading at the time and runniug easily, but before lie could gel clear Coligny hail passed him and held lUe lead to win. Good and Plenty looked well, showed speed, and fenced well except in one in stance, but may have been a bit short, though Ray said he was only canteriug when he struck Ike bog. It »a« Good and Plentys first defeat since the first race ho ran at the Brighton MMM meeting f 1904, when lie ran second to WaJter Cleary. It was Rays first losing ride on the big horse and he took the defeat very much to heart. It appeared to lie bad judgment on the part of Ray to allow iood and Pleniy to encounter* the trouble he did. In the first time around. Realm, which was leading Good and Plenty, almost went down in the same spot. hut Ray did not profit by this lesson. The defeat i.r Good and Plenty was keenly regretted by the public, as there is no more iM.pular horse racing than I lie hlgsm of Rossington. Rut upsets were in order throughout the card. The Newcastle stable won the lirst two races with Saracinesca and Wave Crest and these were the only favorites to win. Prank R. Hitchcock turned loose what may prove to be a real smasher In Smoker. «hhh won the Juvenile Slakes. lieating the red hot favorite Sanguine, from R. T. Wilson. .Its, stable. Smoker is -by Yankee, out of Smoke, and showed a high class performance, though there was little evidence thai il was anticipated by the stable, as he went to the post at 15 to 1. Halifax was another hot one bowled over. The Handsel horse was heavily backed for the To boggan Handicap, bin was never a contender. Ben Han. from the Puryca stable, which went to the DMl at 25 to 1. ran by the pacemakers in the final furlong to win easily from Pantoufle at M to 1. Mr. Duiyea did not expect to bet on Ben Ban. but at the last minute thought better of it, seuding in a commi-sion of »io. three ways. The result was truly a "liookmakers delight." The track was very bad. as the mud was sticky and holding. A high wind swept over the course. which blew up the straight track over which three of the races were run. and this would help to ae count for the poor time made. Although bright and clear it was cold. The card was badly cut up by scratches. A capital card is offered for Monday afternoon and with such good horses as Tanya, Kings Daugh ter. Belle of Request: Marbles, Sussex, Bounding Rat; Veivane, Mink Rat ••. MMM Ken; Bellwether. Transvaal, Alauda: Dandelion, Good Luck. Frank Rill; Rye. Shenandoah, and Entree, among the en Hies, excellent racing will be witnessed if the weather and track should improve.
