CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE FUTURITY. This afternoon will bring about the twentieth annual running of the most valuable event of the American turf for two-year-olds. Through a combination of circumstances the sum that will fall to the owner of the winner will be less than has ever before rewarded the possessor of a Futurity winner, but thai Is not an Item that will particularly affect any one except the owner. The thousands who will flock to the track will applaud the winner as enthusiastically as if lie had won double the 4,040 that will be his share of the stakes. It will be sufficient for them that another Futurity has been run and they have enjoyed the pleasure of viewing its running and greeting the. winner with noisy acclaim. The Futurity bat generally been won by horses belonging to rich men, hut in its first running a poor man was raised Ito affluence when Proctor Knott won for Sain Bryant, and in 1000 Billy Lakelands Electioneer also won It for a good man who needed the money. The second Futurity fell to William L. Scotts Chaos and Mr. Scott was a millionaire several times ovei. The senior August Belmonts Potomac won next. David Gideons Ills Highness followed Potomac and it lias fallen to Gideon to enjoy a greater measure of success in reaping Futurity honors that has rewarded the aspirations of any other owner, his The Butterflies and Requital having, won in addition to His Highness, iln the ownership of the latter two John Daly was his partner. A poor mans horse was again first when the mighty Morello Avon for Frank Van Ness in 1S92. In the next year James R. Keene won his first Futurity when Domino carried 130 pounds to victory. Chacornac won it again for him in 1S00, so that if lie wins it again today his record in connection with the race will equal that of David Gideon. Mr. Keene is a very wealthy man. In 1S90 Marcus Daly came out of the west and won with Ogden. Mr.. Daly could have dropped some millions in the street and not uave been aware of having lost something. Then the Thompson Brothers, L. S. and W. P., heirs to the millions of David D. Withers, won with LAlouette. The Canadians had their only triumph when Marti-mas won in 1S9S. Mr. Hendrie died recently, leaving a great estate. William C. Whitney won witli Ballyhoo Bey in 1900, John E. Madden witli Yankee In 1901, John A. Drake with Savable in 1902, Sydney Paget with Hamburg Belle in 1903, II. B. Duryea with Artful In 1901, and W. OB. MaeDonough with Ormomlale in 1005. All of these men without exception were of the millionaire or more class.
