YONKERS MEETING CLOSES. JAMES BUTLER SAYS IT WAS SUCCESSFUL BEYOND EXPECTATIONS. Plarjs Many Improvements Conference with Belmonts Personal Representative Gold-proof Wins Woodlawn Handicap. f New York, August 30. With an unexpectedly large attendance, the Empire City Clubs meeting at the Yonkers track closed this afternoon. Financially it was a big success. The profits of the club are variously estimated ift from 00,000 to 50,-000 by the more conservative, and by some others at from 50,000 to 00,000. James Butler, the owner of the track, said that the meeting in every respect exceeded his expectations. Beyond the statement that the profits and much more would be spent in improvements he was non-committal as to the future. However, there appears to have been a turn in his favor and for a peaceful attitude on the part of the Jockey Club. Richard Burke, the personal representative of August Belmont, the chairman of the Jockey Club, was early at the track today and Jield a long conference with Mr. Butler and Manager Winn. Mr. Burke declined to he quoted as to what transpired at the conference, but he left the reporters who attempted to interview him under the Impression that Mr. Belmont would no longer oppose the Empire City track, providing it comes under the abso-lute rule of the Jockey Club. Barring the few Instances of suspicions riding and a couple or three times wherein certain horses had the appearance "of not "being well meant, the racing was satisfactory. The chief trouble was a scarcity of horses. The secretary had no easy task because of this, particularly in the handicaps. The bookmakers say that the lietting was entirely to their liking. It was steady and in most instances consistent and there were no sensational plunges. The feature of the racing today was the Wood-lawn Handicap, won by Goldproof after a closely contested race with Cloisteress, Old Honesty, Quadrille, Colloquy and others. Running Account, 51 furlongs In 1:005 was the best performance from a time standpoint at that distance during the meeting. II. K. Vingut advanced him to ,500 from an entered price of and secureiMiim. Jockey Griffith has severed his connection with T. P. Hayes and will in future ride for J. R. Wainwrlght, whose horses will be shipped tonight to Montreal. Many westerners will remain over to see the Futurity. A special horse train will leave here next week for Lexington, Ky. .Many more persons were Interviewed by the stewards relative to the poor riding of jockey L. Williams. The races being probed into are those of Light Wool, Carthage and Llllie Turner. These were beaten on each occasion when Williams had the mount. All of the officials of the Empire City track will witness the Futurity at Sheeiishead Bay tomorrow as the guest of James Butler. Joseph A. Murphy will not he the presiding Judge at Latonia this fall. He will go on a fishing trip after leaving here and in October will preside at Fort Worth, Dallas and Shreveport and then at Bennings. Lyman J. Davis will probably not serve as racing secretary at Latonia this fall. He will have to prepare the program for the Louisville meeting and wants to take a-needed rest.
