EDWIN GUM WINS EASILY. SON OF PLUTUS WHIPS MARSTER IN THE ST.- JAMES HANDICAP. First Mason Is Defeated and Musgrave Is Suspended Jockey Boyle 13 Ordered Away from Blue Bonnets. Montreal, Que., September 7. The attendance at Blue Bonnets this afternoon was the largest of the meeting. When the horses were called to the post for the opening race there was hardly a vacant seat in the grandstand. The going was still heavy and scratches were numerous. In its original stat the program was good. It was built around the St. James Handicap and had as additional features a steeplechase over the two-mile course and a mile and a furlong race on the flat for gentlemen riders. The stake proved an easy thing for the favorite, Edwin Gum. lie won in a canter. The defeat of First Mason, which was an. odds-on favorite in the third race, led to the suspension of jockey Musgrave. He made the fatal mistake of coming to the inside when entering the homestretch, where the going was deep and heavy, while McCarthy took Henry O. to the middle of the track, where the footing was much better. Musgraves ride on the opening day on Prince of Orange came in for a lot of criticism and he escaped punishment on that occasion by a narrow margin. Excuses were made for his ride on First Mason on tlia plea that the horse is heavy headed and especially hard to ride over a muddy track. Dog Rose, which was claimed from Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., by M. J. Daly yesterday, has been returned to his former owner. M. Jacobson, the trainer of the horse, bought him back for Mr. Hitchcock at a small advance. J. E. Madden will race a large string at tire Oakland track next winter. Mr. Madden has arranged to ship eighteen yearlings and six older horses to California. They will be in charge of Mose Jacobson. Mr. Madden himself will be in California after the holidays. He contemplates a trip abroad this fall and his plans are to return via San Francisco. Radtke will probably do the riding for the stable. Phil Chinn is another owner who will race in California this winter. He will ship two carloads to the coast. The Beverwyck Stable will ship direct to Baltimore from Toronto. T. Woods string left for Toronto last night in charge of Charles Phair. Steeplechase jockeys D. Gee and P. Ilagan have also left for Woodbine. P. II. McCarrens string, including Botanist, Sam Bernard, John Rogers, Apple Toddy, Thomas Flyer, Sally Cohen, Star Emblem and Gene Wood, is due to arrive here tomorrow morning from New York. C. J. Fitzgerald, who lias been acting as one of the stewards at Blue Bonnets, left tonight, for New York. The stewards today received a notice from the National Hunt and Steeplechase Association that jockey Harvey Boyles license had been revoked. The boy was escorted off the grounds by Pinkerton police.
