Keene went to Oakland to take up the training of his band of yearlings there for racing after the first of the year, he paid his farm near Lexington, Ky.. a visit. He says that his crack two-year-old, Raconteur, which went wrong in the east and was sent to the farm, "is looking and doing well, but says he will not take a. chance on hopelessly breaking down a colt which "lie believes would have proved as good a horse as Firestone had he not gone .wrong, and will not try to do anything with him until next year. As a matter of fact Itaconteur went wrong at the Oakland track. After finishing second .In" his Jirs:t essay he won three straight races, and then ran third in -a stake In his fifth and last start" iu California. In the last race he won there the colt struck himself and his leg filled up, but he apparently got over that trouble and Mr. Keene took hiin cast. His ouly start there was at Belmont P.irk, and after that lace the injured leg again tilled up badly, and then- his owner decided to turn Jiim out for a long rest at the farm. Aside from the colt, the only other horses at the farm are two broodmares, out of .which Mr. Keene hopes some day to get some good racing material, as. they are Iwth young and royally bred. One is the" five-year-old Fleur de Marie, winner of some good races on the eastern tracks. She is by Meddler, out of Mary C, by Billet. The second dam, Vega, is a full-sister to The Pepper, and she is out of Ballet, dam of half a dozen .stake winners, including the great .Modesty, who has the .distinction of being the only mare that ever won the American Derby. This is considered one of the greatest families in the stud book. Mr. Keenes other reliance for getting .a good horse of his own breeding is Rose Pompon, a three-year-old by Itoyal Flush, sire of Firestone, out of Itetlworth Rose, by Bendigo, her third dam being the dam of Ben dOr, regarded by many is the greatest horse England ever produced. Rose Pompon was raced a few times by Mr. Keene and showed in private trials to be possessed of a remarkable turn o"f speed, on one occasion working five furlongs over the Latonia track in KJ ieconds, but Immediately thereafter she was stricken With catarrhal fever, which pnt an end to her usefulness for racing purposes. Mr. Keene was well pleased with the .appearance of his horses at Oakland. He .will devote his attention to the thirteen yearlings in. the string, the training of the older horses being left to his brother;. "Ham." The complete list of the older horses is as follows! Mansard, Ited Leaf, Pontotoc, Gromohol, Clamor, Prince Nap, Triumphant, Exchequer. Cheers, Boas. Bravour, Uoggs, Vronsky, Jeremiah, Baboo and W.uerzburger. Jockey Herman Itadtke, who will do the .stables riding at the coming meeting, will report about November 1 and help put the finishing touches ou the preparation of the horses. i
