MEELICK WINS AT OiKLAID SCORES AT HIS FIRST ATTEMPT FOR HILDRETH ON THE COAST. Altadice the Only Winning Outsider Mark Antony II. Runs a Good Mile Tawasentha in Front. Oakland, Cal.. November 11. Of the pair of crack two-year-olds that S. C. Ilildreth brought out to race here this winter, Meelick, the lesser turf luminary of the two. made good in brilliant style at the first asking today, whereas the great Uncle, by reason of sudden disability, has been temporarily relegated to the shelf. Meelick, though opposed to an extremely moderate lot of which Fleming was the best, receded steadily and unaccountably in the betting from 7 to 10 opening to 9 to 5, closing finally at 17 to 10. Carmans selling plater, on the other hand, closed at 11 to 10, backed down from 2 to 1 under a tremendous plunge. As was to be expected, the juvenile runner-up on two occasions to Colin and Uncle, was not called upon for a real effort to defeat this kind and incidentally lower the track record for the Futurity Course. It was a high-class performance and made the spectators gasp with astonishment. It. F. Carman, who plunged heavily on Fleming, recouped on Mark Antony II. in the closing race. Aside from the victory of President ."Williams Altadice, a 15 to 1 shot in the opening race, favorites fared well, Orchan in the fifth being the only other exception to lose, his failure being due to a bad start. It is stated on good authority that no effort will be made to race Undo until the California Derby, which will: not be decided until long after the holidays. The trouble is an old one in his feet, and first developed at Saratoga last August. A continuance of the present fair weather will insure good crowds. On this, the second and off day, the attendance approached 0,000. The card was attractive and satisfactory, though lacking in stake features. Jockeys Sandy, Davis and Lynch paid 25 apiece for misbehavior at the post in the first race. Strike-breaker James Farley backed Meelick with serene confidence, taking average odds of 17 to 10 for a couple of thousand dollars. J. L. Holland, C. T. Boots and W. E. Apple-gate, recent arrivals, were visitors at the track. W. OB. Macdonough will arrive at Oakland tomorrow. A band of his Menlo Park broodmares will be shipped to Lexington to be sold at the coining Fasig-Tipton sales. Barney Schreiber is due here next Thursday. Deutschland is afflicted with bad feet and will probably not be seen In public for several months. It is thought that Dr. Leggo will not again stand training. "Red" Walker has been refused stall room on the local track. AValter Miller has been ordered to report here by November 20.
