BOOKMAKER BOLES IS BELLIGERENT. The elimination-"ot George Boles from the list of eastern bookmakers is still a topic of much discussion and surmise in eastern tnrf circles, and rumor has it that he is disposed to bring damage suits. Although not so much heard of as some other bookmakers, until lately, it is apparent he was a heavy operator, and the Sun says of him and his case: "Boles has been operating for several years on a big scale. At one time he had as many as six books on, backed with his bankroll. Ills brothers said that Boles had cinched the game in such a way that, pursuing legitimate methods, he was able to beat the races with remarkable persistency. It is asserted that within the last two years Boles and his brothers have won enough to buy half the town of Greenwich, Conn. In Boles employ are seventy men, including sheet writers, cashiers, outside men, dockers and handicappers, to each of whom he has been paying 13 a, day. With a daily expense item of about 900 a day it can be easily imagined on what a scale Boles has been operating. "Those who attended the meeting of the Mets. said that there were stormy proceedings; that Boles flung bis button on the table and accused the members of disloyalty to him; that he said lie had been a member of the organization since its inception, and that he defied anybody to prove that he had done wrong; that the request to have him withdraw was the result of a plot cooked up by several alleged enemies, and that Boles finally not; only -threatened to bring suit for damages to the extent of 100,000, but also stated that through the aid of a well-known Westchester politician he intended to see what he could do at Albany next spring to break up racing In this state. Bookmakers of prominence were divided in their opinion as to the treatment of Boles. The whole affair has caused no end of gossip, with countless rumors as to the probable reason for the bookmakers present dilemma."
