" K . j , . j . , ; . , i , ; I SPEEDY BRIAR SWEETS CAREER. One of the star race mares of a decade ago was Briar Sweet, by Sir Modred Sweetbriar. She started in seven races in her two-year-old career, winning one, running third three times and being unplaced in her three other starts. Briar Sweet made her debut in the Itoslyn .Stakes at Gravesend, where she finished fifth to Great Rend, Handball and other good ones of her age. Her next start was in tho Double Event at Sheepshead Bay, where she again ran unplaced. Briar Sweet graduated from the maiden class at Coney Island, when she won the Vernal Stakes from LAlouette, the Futurity winner, and nine others. On the first day of the Saratoga meeting Briar Sweet ran fourth to the mighty Hamburg, Handball and Loiterer for the Flash Stakes. In her next three starts she finished third, in the Flirtation Stakes at Saratoga, a purse race at the same track, and to Hamburg and Kitefoot in the Great American Stakes at Coney Island. This ended her career as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old, Briar Sweet started in fifteen races, winning thirteen of them and finishing second in the other two. Sent to California in the early spring of 1S0S, she suffered but two defeats on the coast, being beaten by Montgomery at five furlongs in 1:01 j, and by Paul Griggs the same distance In 1:00J. She defeated such good ones as Napamax and Torsida in the California Oaks, on a heavy track; the fast sprinters liellicoso, OConnell, St. Callatine and Hurly Hurly, 5-S mile in 1:001; won from that speedy mare, May W., 7-S mile in 1:20, when she was taken back east. Starting at the Brighton Beach meeting in July and winding up at the Morris Park meeting in October, Briar Sweet started eight times and was victorious in each attempt. The niost notable achievement was the winning of the First Special, defeating such good ones as Candle Black, Alice Farley, Algol and The Friar, running the mile and a quarter in 2:073. Among other stakes won by her that year were the Dixiana, Ocean Handicap and Santiago Handicap. In 1S99 Briar Sweet was again taken to the coast, where at her first essay she won the Pacific Union Stakes, running the mile and an eighth in the fast time of 1:52L This was her only race in California that winter, when she was again brought back east, her first start being in the Suburban, in which she finished unplaced. The Jamaica Stakes fell to her prowess at tlie Brighton Beach meeting in July. Her last start was in the Islip Stakes, where she finished fourth to Imp, Firearm and Peep oDay, when she was retired to the1 stud and has produced the good winners Kargut and Bouquet, both by Kinley Mack.
