WASHINGTONS PAYING DAY GREAT ATTENDANCE MAKES UP FOR PREVIOUS SCANTY PATRONAGE. Beauclere Takes the Washington Cup in Easy Fashion Economy Wins Junior Steeplechase but Is Set Back. Washington, 1. C, November 2S. The bad weather which prevailed here since the meeting opened has almost made the meeting a failure, but today the crowd was surprisingly large and the afternoon was enjoyable both from a weather standpoint and for the good class of racing. The first race was a big disappointment to the crowd, for Thistledale, from the Colt Stable, was regarded as having the opener at his mercy, but the favorite lost out in the last two strides, only losing the race by the narrow margin of a short head. Thistledale would undoubtedly have won but for Umbrella swinging into him and James Crawford in the stretch, causing them to pull up. and for which the Daly horse was disqualified. Thistledale came on again, while .Tames Crawford fell back out. of all chance to win. The bad humor of the crowd was removed when Bellwether was returned the winner in the second race after leading all the way under a careful ride by MeDaniel. Bellwether was the only starter that the crowd thought had a chance and was backed to the exclusion of everything in the race. Of the others Orfano ran the most notable race, coming from almost last position in the stretch to lose tiiird place at the linish by a head. Ornamentation, second choice in the betting, was practically left. The Junior" Steeplechase, -third on the card, was won by Kconomy, but she was disqualified by the judges for bumping Sandy Crceker. This was the second disqualification of the day, but as this one was in favor of the favorite, there was little or no grumbling. Monkey Puzzle ran a good race and linished a close third. Tin MacCool was the only one to fall, making a bad essay over the next, to the last jump and tumbling Archibald. Neither was hurt. The tabled history- of the Junior Steeplechase is as follows: . i Year. Horse. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 11105 Kernel 14i Gallagher ....00 4:14 1900 Ciudore Fontainel42 Stone 750 5:05 1907 Sandy Creeker ...137 M. Henderson 770 5:11 The fourth race was another cross-country affair and was accorded as much attention as the running of the Junior. Navajo, on his last nice, was made the favorite. with M. Henderson up and this popular rider did not follow his accustomed practice of trailing in the early running, but kept his mount prominent throughout, to come away at the end with a rush to win by eight lengths. Dulcian led to the last jump, where he faltered and fell back. Yanin Christy and Alainansor, which had been close up all the way, passed him, Yama Christy finishing second and Alamansor third. The defeat of Ironsides in the Washington Cup was the fourth consecutive disaster for the Colt .Stable. Ironsides opened as the favorite, but finally receded when the money began to go on Right Royal. In this the public were as much guided by a choice of jockeys between .MeDaniel and Notter as they were by any preconceived preference for either horse. Red Friar, on the strength of his two wins here, was the nearest outsider. The running of the race turned out to be an upset for the crowd when Beauclere won in a canter all the way. Swain reserved his mount for the first mile and a half, closely followed by Ironsides, which was considerably favored by the improved goiug, but he was no equal for the winner when Swain elected to move up into a decisive lead of four lengths, which was increased to six1. Hight Royal moved up after going two miles but was unable to reach Ironsides. Banker ran a good race, while Bed Friar was a keen disappointment. The condensed history of -the Washington Cup is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Yal. Swain .. 1,380 4:00 The Kentucky breeder, Amos Turney, won his first purse at this meeting, when his Captain Sigsbee gelding, Clell Turney, took the handicap, for two-year-olds at a mile and seventy yards over the Columbia Course. Clell Turney was backed into favoritism just at post time, while Dixie Ilimmcl receded from S to 0 to 4 to 1 and better. Swain made another of his good races, holding his mount under mild restraint for the first half, then drew away to win easing up. MeDaniel again outrode Notter when Alauda easily outstayed Live Wire for second place. Lire Wire tired badly in the closing drive. Notter rode a different race on Fancy Bird in the closing affair by reserving the Goldfinch gelding close behind the pace-setting favorite. Tony Bonero Rave way to the rush of Fancy Bird on the far turn and was beaten by five lengths at the linish. Campaigner had - to be ridden out to save third place from the fast-coming Killiecrankie, which got off next to last and remained in that position for the first half mile. The crusade being made by the several societies for the suppression of all kinds of betting in the District of Columbia is causing considerable adverse talk against racing here. What will be the outcome of the crusade and the demand of its promoters for new legislation, no one here ventures to give an opinion.
