CORRIGAN STILL IN LUCK. AGAIN TAKES TWO RACES IN AN AFTERNOON AT CITY PARK. Merrick Wins in a Close Finish with Hooray and Lady Esther — Miss Strome Rewards Her Supporters Confidence. ReW Orleans, I.a.. February 27. — Todays ordinary eanl furnished belter sport than was expected, and ■was witnessed by one of the largest crowds of the season. The traek was in much improved condition and summer like weather prevailed. Edward Corrigan again furnished two of the afternoons winners in Elizabeth Mar wood and Flora Riley. Both were extensively supported. The lirst named bad a hard time in winning from Tony W., and in all probability would not have won but for the latter losing considerable ground by jumping u shadow in the last sixteenth. Flora Riley was much Hie best of the poor racers Unit started in the third race, and won with ease. Incidentally she was one of the two successful favorites. The best contest of the day came in the fifth race, when Merrick, Hooray and Lady Ksther came to Ihe finish in the order named only noses apart. 3. YV. Murphy on the winner being the deciding factor that landed the purse. Hooray and I.ady Esther would have both beaten him with intelligent handling. Merrick was bid up by J. C. Milam, his former owner. *H over his entered price of ,000. mid purchased. hi retaliation Walker claimed Hooray, but failed to get him on account of wording his claim wrongly. He should have made the claiming price 00 more than he did. Jockey- J. W. Murphy is beginning to loom up as the most promising light rider at the local tracks, and again rode three winners at long prices. Alert-liens mi his part at the post was mainly responsible for Virginia Beachs victory in the second race. H - got her away fully in motion and kept her hard at the task throughout, which gave her a two-lengths margin over Black Mantilla at the finish. Miss Strome. well riddPn and escaping interfer-etice in the fifth race, ran to her best form and had little difficulty in Binding the purse. Haughty, showing suddenly improved form, took the sixth race in a canter from Hoeiis Pocus. Mo-selh-, in this race, was made a medium of an attempted betting coup, but failed to be a serious factor at any stage. Belle Scott scored a lucky victory in the closing MM, as l.ady Vincent was much the liest. but was in constant trouble from the start. Jockey . Koerner, whose suspension expired today, had to cancel his riding engagements for the day after his victory on Flora Kiley on account of Illness. The executive committee of the Crescent City Jockey Club will hold a meeting tomorrow to dis- uss the advisHbility of permitting the bookmakers 1o o|»eruie at that track under the system now in vogue at City Park. Koliert Waldm. Jr.. is distributing the stake blanks of the Maryland Jockey Club among the horsemeu at New Orleans. The program of the first week of racing at the Pimlico track will be ready for distribution the first of next week. J. S. Ward has secured first call on jockey C.
