; , . , RUBRIC IN i HARD DRIVE. WINS FROM STANLEY FAY BY NARROW MAR-GIN BECAUSE BEST RIDDEN. Preen Runs Away from Fireball and Other Speedy Opponents — Bill Eaton Also Scores for Schrei- ber — Season at Its Height — Big Crowds. Oakland, CM., Febriiary 27.-j-The Altaniont Handicap, todays mile and a sixteenth feature at Oakland, produced a stirring contest in which the result was in doubt to the very last stride. The winner turned up in Dr. II. E. Rowells Rubric, which was superbly ridden by Walter Miller and in fact owed his narrow victory to that jockeys overwhelming superiority in the saddle over Lycurgus, the rider of the favorite and runner-up. Stanley Fay. Despite the brilliant recent Santa Anita form of the Mirthful six-year-old the odds about him receded steadily in the betting until at post time 2 to 1 was obtainable everywhere. This was due to a tre mendous, but misguided plunge on Walkers three-year-old. whose brilliant Derby achievement last Saturday blinded his backers to the well-known shortcomings of his rider, who, on this occasion, surpassed himself as a bungler in the saddle. Even at. the post, Lycurgus inability to manage the three-year-old aroused the ire of ,the starter, as well as serious misgivings in the minds of the favorites supporters. Dwyer relieved his wrath by suspending Lycurgus for SMS week. The secondary feature on the card, a sprint affair run off as the last race, was captured by Barnes Schreibers fleet Atheling gelding. Preen, a fresh arrival from Santa Anita. The winner was ridden by jixkey Shilling and the combination both out-maneuvered and outpaced the favorite. Fireball, with Miller up. This was the second victory scored during tlie afternoon by representatives from the huge Schreilier establishment. Only two favorites. Bill Eaton and Brookleaf, were successful, but all of the winners with the possibl" exception of Hulford, were accorded plenty of support and the public had a good day. First-class weather prevailed, there is no diminution in attendance and interest in the sport is at the height of its prosperity on the coast. Jack Atkin. a recent arrival from Arcadia, was a visitor at Oakland today. R. L. Thomas remained over to back Preen today and won a big snm over his victory. The Ken-tuckian left for Los Angeles tonight, but will return shortly with a big consignment of racers, which he will campaign at Oakland until the close of the season. W. OBv Macdonoughs Ossary — Sloe horse, Oran. is paralyzed and will be destroyed. The Thorntou Stakes of four miles will be re opened tomorrow for ono day for supplementary entries. Seven additional starters are expected. Jockey Sandy leaves tonight to ride Cull Holland in the two-year-old stake at Santa Anita next Saturday. Reene W. was purchased today by the Spokane Stable. Jockey Sullivan has lwvn set down for a week. H. I. "Curley" Brown, arrived from Los Angeles today and was an interested spectator at the track.
