NEW ORLEANS AT ITS BEST. SEASON NEAR ITS CULMINATION, WITH ATTENDANCE AND INTEREST GREAT. Hyperion II. Defeats Pedro in a Capital Contest — Dandy Dancer Canters In — Topsy Robinson Scores — Pat Dunne Takes Two Races. New Orleans, La., March 4. — A well balanced program again attracts! a big attendance to the Fair Grounds, many of the spectators being carnival visitors still in the city. Fine weather prevailed and the speculation was the sharpest in some time. Hji erion II. won the feature race from Pedro and John Carroll. The Cella candidate was made the favorite at post time aed justified the confidence by going into the lead soon after the start and remaining there throughout. The consistent Pedro made a game effort in the last furlong but tireJ slightly near the end and had to l»e ridden out to save so -ond place from John Carroll. The showing of John Carroll today was a poor one. and the hard track was probably resiwnsible for his poor performance. The time of the race, 1:39s for the mile. •was the fastest of the season, and is within two-tifths of a second of the track record. . R. Ellison and his large following attempted a coup In the sixth race with Earls Court and failed. Hasty Agnes taking the purse with ease from Sam Taylor and The Thorn finishing in third place. Karls Court did not appear to be anywhere near good racing form, and after going a fast quarter tired and finished far back in the ruck. Dandy Dancer, which was accorded heavy supj ort yest.-rday aud baiely failed to finish in the first • three after a i oor send-off and a stormy trip, made a runaway of the third race and was the easiest winner of the afternoon. Topsy Robinson was backed to the exclusion of everything in the second race and never left the result in doubt. McDaniol took her into a long lead on the stretch turn and she won cantering. Miss Hapshurg finally managed to get away from the Mat in a forward position and, displaying superior speed, led a good band of youngsters to the finish in the opening race. Alamia. the favorite, would hav ■ been a dangerous contender, but was almost thrown soon after the start and Kocrner eased her up when she had scant chance of finishing in the first three. Redgauntlet. which was a starter in the Rex Handicap yesterday, was badly jumped on and cut down in the course of the running of the race and will he out of training for many mouths. R. K. Wat kins has shipped De Reszkc to T-xas, where he will be mated with several of the mares now on Watkii.s larm. J. YV. Fuller will not campaign any of his horses during the summer months, and at the close of racing here will send his entire string to Wills Point. Texas, where they will be turned out. The story scut out that Mr. Fullers father had died yesterday was incorrect. Mr. Fuller, senior, died last January. Paul J. Hainey arrived today and will remain for some time. He is authority for the statement that Herman B. Duryea had recently offered Fred Burlew a big price for the crack three year-old. Chapultepec. While Burlew has not absolutely refused to part with his colt, lie would like to retain him until after the running of the Derbys here. • ud for this reason the sale may not be made.
