J COLONEL JACK SHOWS BRILLIANT SPEED. Defeats Veil and Magazine in the Handicap— Horace H. Wins in Fast Time. • Los Angeles, Cal., March 4. — Colonel Jack was at his best today and. showing brilliant speed throughout, simply played with Veil, the 2 to 1 favorite, which her owner lmcked heavily. This was the only piententious nee of the day. The others l eing filled with the poorer class of platers. Rudabek won the opening race after lieing brought fo a hard drive in th" closing strides to withstand the determined challenge of old Ijeash. The latter was practically left at the post, but closed a big gap in the stretch and finished fighting it out with the winner. Master lister, the favorite, was off poorly, but closed an immense gap in the middle running aud then tir -d. The two-year-old race was not much more than h stiff gallop for Horace II.. the winner. He dashed into a long lead right after the start, in-creas d his advantage as the race progressed and won in a canter. • Madrileno followed the winner closely to the stretch, where Bright Skies wore him down for second place. Taylor George wore the pacemaking Money Muss down in the stretch and won the third race from Laudable and Chippewa. Colonel Jack, showing improvement and running to his best form, set a fast pace in the handicap which featured the card and wou cantering. He probably cculd have lowered the track record for the distance if he had been urged. Veil held second place throughout. Magazine received his final preparation for the Derby in the race and finished resolutely in a long stretch drive. Ouardi follow, d Bragg to the stretch and then passing him. won cantering. The finish between the latter and Nadzu was close, while the others trailed "far in the rear. Jockey C. Ross was set down for ten days for cutting across in front of Money Muss with Taylor George. The cut-in today saw a falling off of two from the last draw-in. only twenty-one taking stands. For the Los Angeles Derby, which will lie run next Saturday. Meelick is top weight with 127 pounds, while Stanley Fay will carry 120.
