NEW HILDEBRAND IN SIGHT. YOUNG BROTHER OF FORMER CHAMPION OUTRIDES WALTER MILLER AT OAKLAND. Tom Shaw Wins from Burleigh in Consequence — Orphan Boy Scores Through a Bad Start — Favorites at a Discount — Mansard Goes Lame. Oakland. Cal.. March 4. — At Oakland today, A. F. Daytons Woodlands-bred three -year-old brown colt, Tom Shaw, decisively captured the principal race on the card, the San Gregorio Handicap at six furlongs from the receding favorite, Burleigh, despite the latters advantage at the start, and the champion jockeys best aud at times foul efforts to ward off defeat. The Sierra Nevada Stables promising midget apprentice rider, F. Hildebraud, a younger brother of the former champion jockey, displayed amazing coolness and skill when pitted against his formidable rival, in anticipating Millers attempt to shut him off and by a quick and successful move to the outside, secured the clear cours ■ necessary to enable Tom Shaw to score a comfortable and clean-cut victory at the end over his opponent. Technically, not a single favorite made good during the. afternoon, Warning, in the closing race, being the nearest approach to it, both All Ablaze and Bill Curtis being preferred to the uncertain Previous horse until right at post time, when the market became active about him. The best horse won in every race except in the long-distance affair. The majority of the favorites that failed to materialize were of the ring-mad" variety. In Mansards case the breakdown was anticipated and created no surprise. The fiasco at the start enabled Orphan Boy to spreadeagle his opponents in the juvenile race. Doss colt was supported at 10 to 1. although he had finished consistently, in the rear in his recent three starts. J. Hayes rode Kogo, the favorite, to defeat in the two-mile race, but nobody took this performance of the hitherto honest and consistent Morte Fouse filly seriously. The chilly and threatening weather had a deter-ient effect on the attendance, which fell short of the 5.000 mark. Two books went off, thirty-eight handling the ring business. President Thomas H. Williams two jockeys, Walter Miller and Clifford Gilbert, will ride respectively. Who, Salvage, Judge Nelson, Last Go and Smiley Corbett; Minnie Bright, Byron, Taunt, Massa, Be Thankful and Pajaroita in tomorrows races. C. Sauford purchased Fantastic from Mose Gold-blatt today for ,100.
