BAD STARTS MAR SANTA ANITA RACING. Daruma Wheels and Is Left — Lady Powell Off Poorly — Dominus Atvi Wins Again. Los Angeles, Cal.. March 25. — The leaving of Daruma at the post in the fourth race and the practical leaving of Lady Powell in the first, lioth being heavily backed, marred what otherwise was a splendid days sport. Daruma wheeled as the barrier went up. a performance which she hr been guilty of before, aud Shilling was caught napping on Lady Powell. The victory of Dominus Arvi stamped him one of the best sprinters here at the present time. P. T. Chinn and his friends lost heavily on the defeat of Madeline Musgrave. The filly was in a MK-ket almost all the way, getting clear only in the closing strides and too late to avail her anything. Don Domo pulled up so lame after defeating Mary F. in the first race Monday, that it is probable that the "gray ghost" will never face the barrier again. II. S. Newman, who owns the seven-year-old gelding in partnership with his father. J. F. Newman, says he will send him back to the farm in Texas to spend the remainder of his days in comfort. P. T. Chinn has leased Madeline Musgrave and Harry Stanhope, two-year-olds, for the rest of the season to S. A. Clopton. Clopton will take possession of them at the close of the meeting. Entry blanks for the stakes to be run at Denver this summer, have arrived at the track. A number of owners of small stables here will make nominations and ship there next month. The first run-up in many days occurred when W. P. Maxwell hid up Barbette from 00 to 00 and secured her. Nineteen books drew in today, most of them losing heavily. K. F. Carman will leave for New York tomorrow. The association will put seven races on from now until the close of the meeting, with the object of giving the poorer owners a chance.
