GEMMELL FROM THE START. GIVES WEIGHT TO CRACK SPRINTERS AND WINS ALL THE WAY. Del Cruzador Takes the Two-Year-Old Race Like a Real Crack — Sugarmaid Defeats Cadichon — Lee Rose Top Weight in Gcbhard. Oakland. Cal., March 25.— Gemmell, the splendid Rubicon gelding, came into his own finally at Oakland today. With Miller in the saddle and favored with a quick start, the champion sprinters exploit in the San Ramon Handicap was so convincing that everybody, horsemen and public alike, acclaimed him one of the best horses ever bred and raced exclusively on the Pacific coast. Two other high-class racers in Del Cruzador and Sugarmaid, were engaged during the afternoon. This brilliant trio could hold their own anywhere. For some inexplicable reason the odds against Sugarmaid were kept receding against persistent public support. The only plausible explanation for this state of affairs is that the layers, who had been, losing steadily throughout the day over the monotonous successes of the favorites, resorted to heroic gambling measures and overlaid themselves on the last one in order to get out on the day. The weather has turned cool and indications are for rain within the next few days. Eight thousand spectators enjoyed high-class sport. Jockey Kirschbaum was suspended for three days by the starter. Sandy was fined 5 for hitting Captain John over- the head with his whip in the closing strides of the juvenile race. Clifford Gilbert leaves tonight for Los Angeles to ride some of Barney Schreibers horses. He will return by Saturday next. Roy Offutt has notified secretary Percy W. Treat that he will ship here at the close of the Santa Anita meeting. The weights were announced today for the Geb-hard Handicap to be decided next Saturday. Lee Rose has been given top weight of 124 pounds. Rose Queen comes next with 118, Del Cruzador and Duke of Milan are given 11C each. There are ninety-four eligibles to this rich fixture.
