AMERICAN HORSE WINS GRAND NATIONAL. Liverpool. England, March 27. — The Grand Na-lional Steeplechase, the greatest cross-country race in the world, worth : .O00 sovereigns and a trophy valued at 12." sovereigns, was run today over the QllM National course of four miles and Sod yards, mid won by Major F. Douglas-Pennants ten year-old chestnut gelding. Kubio. by Star Ruby — La To- piera. by ten lengths. Mr. William Coopers six-year old bay mare, Mattie Macgregor. by Kvan Mac gregor — Ju. was second, and Mr. P. Whitakers h vcn-year-old chestnut gelding. Lawyer III., by Broxton — Solon, was third. The betting on the winner was 60 to 1 against: ■a Mattie Macgregor 2." to 1 against, and on Lawyer III., loo to 7 against. The race was notable for the number of favorites that failed to take all of the difficult jumps marking the course, a circumstance that allowed cm ouisidcr to capture the blue ribbon of ste ■pb-cliasing. The interest or Americans was centered in the performances of Foxhsill P. Keenes two candidates in the foremost steeplechase race Of the world, which were the ten-year-old chestnut mare. The winner was the first horse bred in the Tnited States to win the race. Kubio was bred »iv James B. Haggin. foremost of American breeders, at his Rancho Del Paso establishment at Sacramento. California, in ISM. Kubio was sired by Star Ruby, which was bred by the Duke of Westminster, and after making two starts in the colors • if his breeder, in the Stockbridge Foal Stakes ami «he Rous Memorial Stakes, in both of which he was unplaced, was then sent to the 1nited States, where lie became a great racer, winning among many others the Thornton Stakes, at four miles. A full brother to Rubio. Somlircro. was also a good race horse, winning he California Derby, the Buffalo Derby and oilier races, and is BOW a stallion in Kliiicmlorf Stud. Rubio never raced in America, and made his first start under colors at the November. P.hMi. meeting at Kompton Park, finishing third to Sud-d««i Rise and Denton in a two-mile steeplechase. i Hurst Park last vear he was second to Canary II. in the three-mile Grange Steeplechase Handicap. He then won the Newbury Stecplccha M and followed it with the Towcestcr Handicap at the ; raft on Hunt meeting. He was third to Anna lure and Asliton in the Nottingham Handicap Steeplechase, and again finished third to Springlmk and Paddy Maher in the Grand Sefton of two miles, neveii furlongs and lit yards, over the Liverpool course November 7 last.
