ENGLISH BROODMARES FOR ARGENTINA Messrs Haggln and Keene will meet with Eng ¬ lish competition in South America In the London Sportsman of August 4 W Allison writes writesThe The first special consignment of English brood ¬ mares for Bnenos Ayres ten in number will he shipped before the end of tli current month and I bear by cablefrom Buenos Ayres that the prospects oft business arc brilliant brilliantTwelve Twelve yearlings which have been rounded up at Cobbam will leave that stud tomorrow August 5 on their way to Liverpool from which port they will be shipped on or about the eighth Instant on board the Lamport and Holt steamship Bellgrano They are consigned to W Yonng of Montevideo and are Intended for racing In that country The countryThe twelve are fine wellgrown yearlings and quite likely to win distinction in their new countrv Mr Young bought a number of yearlings In this country in 1000 and several of them have turned out well enough to induce him to repeat the experi ¬ ment mentIt It lis no easy matter to ship stock to South American ports there being such endless formalities to observe most of them being quite useless from a practical point of view But any omission is vis ¬ ited with quarantine which is Dad business indeed for animals newly landed from a threeweeks voy ¬ age An additional trouble in landing them at Montevideo Is that they have to be swung overboard into lighters and there is often a good deal of motion on the sea at that point Some progress however had been made with harbor works when 1 was last there and it is possible that the Bellgrano may be able to disembark cargo at a quay side
