JOHN GATES BETTING AGAINST HUGHES. New York. September 30. The first big bet with Chanler a favorite over Hughes for. the coming election was made at the Waldorf-Astoria Monday noon and was later made known at the Aqueduct race track. A. B. nudson. a well-known broker and turf" operator who halls from Chicago and is a tclose friend of John AA. Gates, met Richard C. Doggert, -a former clubhouse commissioner and horseman, at the hotel aud in the course of an argument Doggett disclosed the fact that he Tiad a commission of 0,000 to wager on Hughes if suitable odds could be secured. "Ill bet you at even money," said Hudson, "and Ill take all youve got at that quotation." "Chanlers strength is greater now than It was a week ago." replied Doggett, "and if you will lav mo 4,000 you are on." "Ill do that." said Hudson after deliberating .1 while. Hudson agreed to the proposition and the big bet was clinched then and there. 1 Around the hotel it was common gossip that Hudson had wagered Gates money.
