- s : : LEADING WINNING HORSES FOUR YEARS OLD AND OVER. Ballots Wonderful Racing and Big Winnings in Five Successful Contests. i In the matter of winning money, two of the four-year-olds of 10OS stand out alone Ballot and Jack Atkin. Of this pair Ballot, by reason in pr.rt of his more lucrative engagements, won milch the most and is, in fact, one of the greatest money winners of American turf historv with .50,115 now to his credit. Ballot Is truly a great race horse and has not known defeat this year. Ho has started in five r.iccs and won them all, scoring some great performances. His first start was for the Standard Stakes at Gravescnd, where he ran a mile and a quarter in 2:05?. with 120 pounds. Next he won the Suburban Handicap, in which, when carrying 127 iiounds, he ran its mile and a quarter in 2:03. Next lie won the Kquility Stakes at a mile in, 1:3! and carried 130 pounds. The Advance Stakes at a mile and five-sixteenths was his next race and here he established a new record for the distance bv running it in 2:00?. witii 120 pounds, on his back. His last start was in the Century Stakes at a mile and a half. This he won in 2:302. carried 320 pounds and could have bioken the record. As it was it was a new track record for Sluenshead Bay. Those five races put 5,015 to Ballots credit, a decided advance over Jack Atkins VIO.l!. The latter good horse had a much more strenuous campaign than Ballot and had to run twenty-four races to roll up his meritorious total. He is now enjoying a well-earned rest and will next he soon in public in California. That ho is one of the fastest horses in America he has repeatedly demonstrated and is a grand weight carrier besides. It was tho fashion among the eastern turf writers to represent him as a liHi-stayer. but up to the- longest distance he was sent, a mile and an eighth, he stayed as well as could lh asked of anybodys horse and his staying over any distance is probably mere-y a matter of training for long-distance racing. Montgomery and Simon Pure were the only other four-year-olds to win more than SMiflCO. Montgomery was a grand race horse in California last winter arid spring, but for some reason he trained off after being brought east and has done practically nothing in comparison with what was expected from him. It is to be hoped removal to California will bring him around again. Simon Pure was t-cyond doubt the find of the year in steeplcchasing and if Now York raciug is preserved will be sure to give a groat account of himself In 1019.
