AGNEWS VIEW OF THE DECISION. New York, November 2-1. Senator George B. Ague w, one of the authors of the Ilart-Agnew bills, today expressed himself as not in the least disturbed over the decision of the Apellate Division that oral betting was not illegal tinder the new law. "The decision is exactly in accordance with the stand I took during the hearings on the bills last winter." said the senator. "At that time I declared that the Hart-Agncw bills did not prohibit oral wagers. "The remarkable thing about it was that while the lawyers for the race track interests. Mr. Auer-bach and others, before the committee, asserted that the bills did prohibit oral hetting. they since have attempted to get the ruling which the court has ; just made. They have lieen fighting vigorously for such a construction of the anti-gambling bills." "Will the law be strengthened?" Senator Agnew was asked. "I dont know why. We did all that we wanted to last winter. Our fight was against organized I gambling at the race tracks, and. as I understand the decision, it plainly states that the statute contemplates the prohibition of bookniakiug. The bills ; accomplish what we set out to do, and. although , the race track people may sot out to obscure the issue, as they klid during the fight for the hills, the court decision in itself upholds the laws." "Do you think that the decision will bring about I a. revival of bookmaking?" "Certainly not. The decision has to do specifically with oral bets, and under it no one will dare to resume . bookmaking at the race tracks."
