LORD ROSEBERYS LUCK ON THE TURF. It is related of Lord Itosebery that when a schoolboy he bet a companion a sovereign that he would marry the richest heiress in England, become premier and own the winner of the Derby before he died. How he has realized his ambition is a matter of history. He has, it is well known, won the Derby three times in all. His Lordship was once, in the cast end of London at election time, and while inspecting a great establishment several of the employes, whose knowledge of the distinguished guest chiefly centered in Mm as the owner of a good horse, communicated to one of the company their wisli that Lord Itosebery would do them a favor. "What is it you want a speech.?" asked the gentleman. "A speech. No, .speech be hanged," was the reply. "AVe want a tip for the Liverpool Cup." To few ownera Is given the chance ot running two Derby winners in ono race. AVhen, therefore. Lord Rosebery availed himself of the opportunity and started both Ladas and Sir Aisto for the Jockey Club Stakes of 1895 he established a record, nolmdy else having rim two Derby victors in one event of any de scription whatever.
