CANADAS GAIN AT OUR EXPENSE. Within the past four "weeks over 250 thoroughbreds have been bought in the United States by Canadians. This is a greater number than was purchased in the preceding twenty years and is doubtless due to the fact that values took such a tumble since the passage of the Hart-Agnew bill that high-class quality was obtainable for less than one-third former values; The great financial loss sustained by American breeders of thoroughbreds has been to our gain and we are delighted to know that so much good blood has been brought to this country. New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario. Manitoba and British Columbia have all been enriched by these purchases and we hope that a gratifying success will reward the efforts of those "who have invested their money. Mr. Whentcroft. of Victoria. Is now the most extensive owner of thoroughbreds in Canada and a general desire has been expressed to see his colors at the May meeting of the Ontario Jockey Club. He certainly bought the cream of the stock offered at the Mc-Grathiana and subsequent sales and his plnck and enterprise deserve success. Messrs. Seagram. Dy-ment. Kervey, McKee. Dr. Henderson and Mr. Clinch tlie latter acting for ihe New Brunswick government were, the chief purchasers, and as they are all experienced men, itherc ican be little doubt they made wise, selections.
