SANTA ANITA TRACK IS IMPROVING. Proper Wins Again and Passes to a Now Owner Active Bidding Up a Featuro. Los Angeles. Cal.. December 4. A clear sky and warm sun dried the course out considerably today, but the going was still somewhat slow and cuppy. The moderating weather had much to do in bringing out one of the best crowds of the week. Owing to the drying-out track but little scratching was indulged in. the fields being large in all but the fourth ind fifth races. Old Proper made good again today, but in doing so parted company with owner H. R. Brandt. He was outrun to the stretch then faltered! and appeared beaten, but rallied with some of his ancient gameness and overwhelmed Elizabeth F. In the last 100 yards. He was in for 00. but O. iS. Ware, who ran second with Elizabeth F.. promptly raised him to 00. where owner Brandt desisted and let him go. Captain Burnett was the medium of a big coup in the liftli race, beating the well-backed favorite, Merlingo, in a canter. He was backed down from 10 to 4i to 1 and never left the result in doubt. In this race Sweet, on Colonel White, allowed his mount to swerve into and bump Alma Boy out of his stride on the first turn, for which he was promptly rilled 0. The first run-up of the season took place in the third race, won by Brusli Up, from a fair band of platers. She was bid up from .00 to 00 by wncr W. Gabriel, whose mare, Nonie Lucille, ran second, and was secured by him. It was the con sensus of opinion among horsemen that Gabriel paid too much for the mare. Jockey McCarthy arrived here today from Frisco to ride either Uestigouehe or Dandelion in the selling stakes tomorrow. Mr. Ilildreth will probably keep McCarthy here for some time. Among the latest arrivals are George Rcardon. brother-in-law of John W. Schorr, the wealthy Memphis brewer and turfman. The letting was fairlv good with the public anil books breaking about even. Tomorrow will be draw-In day.
