* , , + RACERS NINE GR MORE YEARS OLD THAT CAN STILL TRAVEL WITH GOOD SPEED x. .a. The "glorious climate" seems to do wonders for horses as it does for mankind and California racing affords a surprising nitmlier able to run well at an age ordinarily considered past the limit of usefulness. It is true that they cannot do as well as when in their meridian of speed and fame, but it is a fact that many of the old ones are wonderfully track wise and will not run to their limit, except now and then when in the mood. Such one-time cracks as Proper and Deutscbland showed last winter to be in full possession of their old-time speed, but to induce them to put it forth when in a race was quite another matter. The following table of oldsters of nine or more years is sufficient illustration and quite an interesting exhibit of well preserved si eed: S. Polks Proper, b. h. 9. bv Preston-pans — Prim II. Year.
