SHIELDS HORSES APPEAR PROMISING. Toronto. Ont.. April 17.— W. Shields, a Canadian by birtb, for the first time in his rating career, has wintered his horses in Canada. Last fall he decided to try a Canadian winter and sent his string to the Dyment farm at Barrie. The horses went into winter quarters after a hard seasons campaign rather raced out. but they show the careful handling they have had and look at their best. Reidmoore. which was t tie bread-winner lor the stable last sea-ton, looks more like a two-year-old than a si year-old. He has taken on a lot of weight, which will Kive his trainer something to work on. Al Buseh and .Tim farkinson. which did not do particularly well as two year -oMl last summer, have developed into fine looking three year olds, haying giowu and filled out. This pair will lie liberally en tcred in the events for three year "Ids all through the Canadian circuit. Old Hotaeber, which went wrong last fall, has wintered wonderfully well and will be once more sent to the races. Since bringing the horses from Barrie to Toronto Mr. Shields has added three to his string in V. I. Hindi. Occidental and Al Herford. W. 1. Hinch is a fair sort of a selling plater and will be useful In overnight purses. The Ally, Occidental, ran some good races as a two-year-old last season aud should show improvement this year. This filly is one of the heat-tred tilings that has ever come ta Canada, being by Montana out of the mare Lisanne. Al Herford is a likely-looking two-year old. being well set up. with plenty of bone. He should be a weight-carrier from the way he is coupled and will take some healing. Al Herford is by Locobatchee out of the man-Clcogne. wbieb has dropped some great foals. William Shields will run a public stable this season and will bavr» some giMxl horses to train. He has now four horses for Itobert Davics under his care, including two platers, a two year old and the juniper. Capstan. The two year old is an especially good-looking province-bred. The platers are both good lookers and showed some speed as III Jf I olds last fall. They are both by Orme Shore. Several American owners have written asking Mr. Shields to take some of their horses so that he will probably have one of the largest strings at the track this year. Tmeman. who had a bad fall last year which kept him from doing as good work in the saddle as he was capable of doing, will ride for the -table.
