KENTUCKY DERBY HORSES LOOMING UP. Respess Wintergreen Still Favorite, but Others Are Attracting Attention. I.iiisville. Ky.. Friend Barry, a chestnut colt, by Orlando-Al.ee Brand which belongs to Edward Alvev. is. barring accident, a sure starter in the big event. This good colt lias been campaigned on the Paciiie coast under the direction of Grover Baker and J. C. Fer-riss. At Sanla Anita, on last Tuesday. Friend Harry was started in a six-and-one-half furlongs dash, in which lie linished second to Homecrest. a 4 to B lavorile. He ran well. It was his first start In a leas; time. Tin- colt has never shown at his best : n the coast. 1 til t now be is rounding to and competent critics express the belief that lie has much more than a chance to capture the Derby. It is known that tiiis game colt is receiving careful preparation and it is certain that by the time he reaches Church ill Downs In- will lie readv to run a good nice. Ihe news was uuietlv circulated during the week that Michael Angelo. owned by George Hendiie. and trained at Cumberland Park, Nashville had been working in sensational time and seems to figure as a contender in the Derby. The colt iias not heretofore done anything to warrant the isjamo-siiion that lie is of Derby class. John Walters is training him. Rome Respess Derby candidates. Wintergreen -ami-Rockcastle, have not worked in sensational time this week at Churchill Downs, but until Thursday the track was not in condition to justify fast trials However. Wintergreen was sent a mile in 1:4.1 and Rockcastle in 1:44. It is thought now Wintergnvn will be the sole dependency of the Respess barn, and the majority of track sharps still firmly believe that this one will win. The question, though. is invariably asked: Can a Dick Welles colt slay the Derby route. Respess only smiles. Meanwhile he is secure in the belie! that the prize is his. V. Powers will ride Wintergreen in the Darby, unless he goes abroad. W. J. Youngs Direct and Warfield. eligibles to the Iierhv are coining along fine at Churchill Downs. The lirst of the week Direct was sent three quarters in 1:141 and Wariield in 1:10. Later Direct was sent a mile in a shade less than 1:44. Noihit llvnes.
