I A grand-looking chestnut colt stepped from a car I at Churchill Desna last evening, after having trav- eled from Santa Anita. Cal.. appearing every inch ; the fast racer and able to fulfill the expectations of i his owner. Edward Alvey. that in Friend Harry he has the winner of the Kentucky Derby. The colt Withstood the journey without showing the least sign of fatigue. Alvey was present to see his racers, and so was John Ferriss. who spent the win let at Santa Anita, assisting in looking after the string, which, besides Friend Harry, consists of Pinkola. Prime Ahmed. Colonel Bob. Dr. Mathews ami Miss Lido. En route from the coast Dr. Math- I eus was taken sick, but he will be all right within a day or two. The run from Los Angeles was marked by a five-hours delay, and the consignment, which included Pat Dunnes stable, rolled into Chicago five hours lale. which i-aused a lay-over of several hours and did not lei the horses get away for Churchill Downs until yesterday morning. Pinkola. which was formerly trained by W. H. Fizer. and with which he won the Latoniia Derby. Empire City Handicap and other stakes and purses last year. Is beginning to look like himself again. He proved a disappointment after Alvey paid a big price for him. but his ill-success on the coast is attributed to too much racing at New Orleans in the middle west ami then in the east. Colonel Bah, another star in the Alvey barn, has developed into a bad actor. He. too. ran disappointingly on the coast last winter. Prime Ahmed is one Alvey certainly will score with. He is in splendid condition. He broke the track record at Santa Anita when he stepped seven-eighths iu l:2o*. A mile in 1:!S was also one of his achievements. Jockey Musgrave. who piloted Alveys horses on the coast, is here and is in condition. He will ride Friend Harry in the big race. This lad is an Indi ana product, hailing from Evansville. and is a little gentleman. Pat Dunnes stable fared well coining from Call fornia. He finished cighrh in the list of winning owners at Oakland, lieing right behind Barney Schreiber and in front of C. R. Ellison. The Peer is Dunnes liest. but he has several youngsters which will be raced at the Downs. Huntley Baker has Gerrymander and First Peep. Ha had a prosperous season in California, but is glad to get back. He sold Financier and John Louis to Dick Williams for ,500 ami disposed o! Hostile Hyphen to C. C. Powers, father of jockey V. Powers. Henderson and Hogan took Hannibal Bey from Baker through the claiming route at a cost of 00. Secretary Lyman II. Davis and track superin ten. lent Harry Carr were proud of the fact that three banes from the Downs — Wool Sandals. Turf Star and Debar— won three races at Lexington, splitting the card. John Ferriss stable, which was in training throughout the winter at Cumberland Park. Nashville, will arrive Wednesday at Churchill Downs iu charge of trainer Roy Cassady. Ferriss has some useful raiers. among them being St. Volma. Bonnie Kate. Ada O. Walker. Olambala ami several promising two-year-olds. Olambala lielongs to J. G. Greener of Nashville, who owned Oiseau. Lew Marion, who arrived yesterday from Califor nia with I. II. Wheatcrofts St. James Stable, is pleased over the condition of his charges. Mentor, which lielongs to the Cella stable, and which was raced Saturday at Lexington, was trained at Douglas Park, and probably will develop into a star. He is sixteen hands high and weighs 1 688 pounds. He was bought as a yearling for $:s.:!00. Carroll B. Reid. who is here from California wit.i Third Rail and Beu Trovato. is feeling well over the turf situation. William McDauiel is a coast arrival. He is without a stable. George Him is at Churchill Downs with the racers owned by W. Get at which were campaigned at Oakland. Others here from California are T. H. Stevens and W. P. Fine, who raced La Gloria and others at Santa Anita. Rome Respess is gratified over the showing of Wintergreen in the mile Derby trial at Lexington on Saturday. He arrived yesterday at Churchill Downs with the colt. "Wintergreen came up to ex- poctations," said Respess. "I think 1 have the winner of the Kentucky Derby." Turfmen hire say that Sir Cateshy. T. P. Hayes Derby eligible, is by no means eliminated from "the race on account of his showing at Lexington. He is classed as a green colt with much speed, Au effort is to be made to get Dave Nicol to ride one of the Derby starters.
