SEAGRAM COLORS IN FRONT MENDIP WINS THE MAPLE LEAF STAKES FOR THE CANADIAN TURFMAN. Victory of Nod in Maiden Race Hits the Toronto Ring — King James Arrives to Make Bid for Toronto Cup Today. Toronto. Ont. Kay 2S. — The conditions of two of the races at Woodbine this afteraooa called for maidens. There were twenty-two entries made in these dashes. The first half proved an easy thing for .Shore Lark, trained by Willie Shields, which filly lieat her company in a romp. The last half of the race, which was run as the seventh, furnished a stirring contest in which the heavily backed Nod came from far la-bind in the stretch and beat out Tremarco a scant length. Tbe .feature race was the Maple Leaf Stakes, and it proved a one-sided affair for Mondip, coupled with Lady Milner as the Seagram entry. Mendip was much the best and won in a canter by a dozen lengths. French Shore showed a lot of early speed in the race, bit retired alter going a good six furlongs. The races wire run over a heavy track, but despite the change in the going the public had a good line on the horses, four heavily backed second choices and a well backed favorite winning. Jockey Hiuch-cllffe rode two winners. Busy and Thomas Calhoun. Busy came from behind in his race, while Thomas Calhoun made all of his owu pace and won in a canter. A killing was made on the victory of Nod in the closing event. He ran in the colors of Dr. K. W. Carter, manager of the Kamocas Stud at Jobstown. N. J., and was backed from a high tube of :;o to I down to 12 to 1. Dave Leary arrived at Woodbine this morning with Sam Hildreths good horse. King James. The latter shipped in Rood i ndition. and after being unloaded was as frisky as a yearling. King James is top weight in the Toronto Cup. the big eveni of the meeting, which is provided as the feature of tomorrows program. Guv Burns came along and will have the mount on King Jfcinies. The plans are lo ship the horse back to Sheepslicad Bay ou Snndav. and he will lie a starter in the Brooklyn Handicap at Gravesend on Thursday next. The stiff going is supposed to favor High Privates chances, and the latter will not lack friends. Either Gilbert or Harty will have the mount on the ForsvaVt caudi " date. Mentry was to have ridden Guv Fisher, but. according to a ruling made by tbe stewards yesterday, this boy will not hereafter be permitted to accept mounts outside of the three stables that have calls on him. These include William aliill. J. Dv-ment and William Walker. It was announced this afternoon that Direct will not start and In that event Kettig will have the mount on Cuv Fisher. Stromeland. Detective. Bellwether and Amrl are also doubtful starters. This leaves only King James. High Private. Gay Fisher. Hanbriilge and Aroudack to go. Herbert will ride Hanbriilge. while Goldstein probably will have the mount 011 Aroudack. Bouquet, of the Seagram stable, is coughing, which accounts for her absence from the list of Cup contestants.
