A. B. SPRECKELS IS UNDAUNTED. San Francisco, Cal., January 7. A. If. Sprockets is going ahead with extensive plans for the coming season at his large breeding establishment at Napa. Although most California breeders quit and sold out when adverse legislation came, Mr. Spreckels went right ahead with raising thoroughbreds on a larger scale than before. Ho has a place for breeding thoroughbreds at Napa, which manager George Berry lioasts is second to none in the country. It covers a large area of ground, with many fine buildings, a training track and general modern equipment of the highest class. Eighty men are employed on the place the season round, and for climate, feed, water and other natural advantages the Spreckels establishment is hard to equal. Mr. Spreckels takes great pride in his farm, too, and devotes a lot of personal attention to the work .going on. He takes great pleasure in raising horses. He is himself a student of pedigrees and decides how his mares are to toe mated. There are five stallions aud eighty mares at the Napa Stock Farm this season, aud inauager Berry expects to produce thirty-eight racers this year. The sires are all well known, including Dr. Leggo, Puryear D., Solitaire II., Big Chief and Voorhces. Mr. Spreckels has confidence that racing will be restored to Its former standing, and is going to continue his Napa Stock Farm along ambitious lines.
