DRIZZLING RAIN IN SOUTH BENDERS MONCRIEF PARK UNCOMFORTABLE BUT TRACK REMAINS PAST. Judges at Jacksonville Probing Beep Into Abrasion Race and Promise to Spare None Racing Marked by Close Finishes. Jacksonville, Fla.. January 24. A cold, drizzling rain, which started in about the time the horses wore called to the post for the opening race and continued all afternoon, made the grandstand at Moncrief Park anything but a comfortable spot. Not enough rain fell, however, to hurt the track and the going was good all afternoon. Well-matched lields went to tno post and keen contests resulted. Efficiency, which beat a big band of two-year-olds in the opening dash, and the only successful favorite, was the only winner that had anything to spare at the , finish. Less than a length separated the first two in the last four races. The judges announced that they intend probing the Abrasion race to the bottom ami that no one found to have been mixed up in the affair would be spared. The bookmakers sheets were taken up and George Walker, who trains Ben Double, was sent for. He said that the only way he could account for Ben Doubles showing was the fact that he has an enlargement just below the knee on one of his front legs and this may have hampered him. K. D. Williams reported that Glucose came out of the race a sick horse and that he is suffering from acute indigestion. The fourth race, a three-quarter mile allowance affair, brought out a smart baud of sprinters, with Barleytliorpe ruling an odds-on favorite. The race proved a stirring contest, five of the nine starters lighting It out through the homestretch and separated by heads and jiecks as the winning mark was passed. The result found the extreme outsider, Herbert Turner, first lioino, a iiose in advance of Rye Straw, with Useeit beaten another head. Barley thorpe was a tiring fourth. Frank Yrisbie. who has become a booster since Antenor and Danficld were taken from him out of selling, races, bid up Spindle Q0 over, hjs entered prleoof .5400 after he won the sixth race and became his owner. Premier, running for the first time In J. B. Bradfields colors iii the second race, was claimed for 25 by former jockey Tommy Burns, who was represented in the race by Im There. Jockeys Xieol and Bolaitd wore suspended for six days by the starter for disobedience at the post. Sterling Evcrhardt, who arrived here froni Xew Orleans a few days ago, was pent to his home in Kansas City yesterday. Fete. Collett had the matter hi charge. Mr. Everhardt has been suffering from a nervous breakdown. Mr. and Mrs. James Villipeague of Sheepshead Bay arrived this morning and will remain for a few days lwfore continuing on their jouruev to Palm Beach. Manager II. I. Brown has announced that the race for women riders had been indefinitely iKJStponed. lie will Instead put on a handicap automobile race. In the way of comedy, a race for goats will also be placed on the card. These will be driven by the small boys who own them, and will be run an eighth of a mile. The two-year-olds that have been sent to the post have been a well-behaved lot and they have given much less trouble than the older horses. Much was expected from the Pons and Williams juveniles, but neither of these stables has furnished a winner in shy of the two-year-old races run to date. There are some extra good lookers in the Pons string and later on George Walker will probably gather some purses with them. Most of the Williams youngsters are gross and big. They have plenty of size, but run greenly. Ait attack of sickness which set in about a month ago in the Williams barn has made the youngsters backward and they probably will not be at their best until the latter part of the meeting: S. A. Clopton has sold Grandissimo and 1. T. Shlpp lo G. W. Waggoner, who will race them at Tampa. Weather cloudy; track fast: Abrasion Three-quarters in l:19j. Alfred the Great Three-quarters in 1:10.
