KEENE CASTOFF GOES TO STUD. Andrew J. Gorey Gives Up Attempt at Coup With Transvaal After Several Disappointments. Lexington, Ky., February 4. After attempting two seasons to pull oft a coup with tho Castleton-brcd horse, Transvaal. Andrew J. Gorey. the Bour-bon County turfman, has abandoned hope of ever winning a race with the six-year-old son of Commando and Royal Rose dam of Lancastrian, Regal and Iron Mask, by Royal Hampton aiid lias arranged to put him in the stud at Thomas J. Nichols farm near Paris. Transvaal has a bowed tendon and trainer James Rowe lias said that this disability is due in greatest measure to the fact that he was the only horse in- the James R. Kceno string that could make the mighty Colin run when they were in their two-year-old and three-year-old form and he was practically broken down chasing the great son of Commando and Pastorella in preparatory work-outs.. Transvaal carried Mr. Keones colors white and blue polka dots in six races as a two-year-old in 1007 and was not unplaced. He won the Maiden Stakes at Belmont Park and the Manbauset Stakes at Gravesend, was beaten half a, length by Royal Vane for the Hudson Stakes at Gravesend, finished second to Apple Toddy and. Tartar .Maid respectively, in a. couple of allowance races, one at Aqueduct and the .other at Jamaica, and was third to Woodbine and Hie Dane in .the, Greenfield Stakes at Jamaica. The next year he made Ills first start as a three-year-old in the Toboggan Handicap at Itelmnnt Park and ran unplaced. Next time out he was third to Chapiiltepee and Question Mark in the Carlton Stakes at Gravesend, and four days later was second to Master Robert in the Broadway Stakes at Gravesend. Transvaal caihe out of this race limping and Mr. Keene cast him off, turning him over to Dr. S. W. Street t, who sent him to the post three times in the fall of 190S, the best performance being second lo Saraeinesca at Jamaica. Dr. Streett. at the con-elusion of the Latonia meeting, sold Transvaal to Mr. Gorey. who shipped him to Paris and the following spring 1000 mated him with several mares with the result that there arc now in Bourbon County half a dozen fino-appoaring yearlings bv him, Messrs. J. Hal Woodford. Martin Doyle aridT. J. NlcIiOIs each having two of fheiu. . After Transvaal had made thai first short season, .Mr. Gorey put him in training again. Hp started twice at Montreal, and twice" at Louisville in the summer and autumn and each time was unplaced, but in October when they reached Latonia he was in such fine fettle that his owner was sure he could win-with -him .all the money ho would ever need. Accordingly he marshaled his forces anil they quietly placed commissions in many handbooks throughout the country. The odds were as good as 25 to 1. Transvaal was beaten a nose on the post by -Gypsy King. The money won by place betting just about stood off that which had been wagered straight. Mr. Gorey started him once more in the fall of 1909 and he finished unplaced. He shipped the son of Commando back to Bourbon County and in the spring of 1910 mated him with thirty-dive mares, charging nothing for the service, and it is now said that probably thirty of these will foal during the next three months. Transvaal looked so good to Mr. Gorey when summer came that be could not resist the temptation to make another try for big monev with him. So he put him in training and got liimreadv for a race, at Louisville October 0. This time Transvaal finished second to Duquesnc. the mutuels paving the equivalent of ,.10 to and again the monev bet straight .was saved. Transvaal raced twice, during the next six days and was both times unplaced, his last race being on October 12. At tho close of the Louisville . meeting he was shipped to Lexington along with Old Honesty, son of Previous and Miss Doyle, and both ran out all winter at the farm of Ernest L. Featherstone near this city. Mr. Gorey has made no decision as to "the future of Old Honesty, though during the winter he declined to sell him. ,It is possible that be will serve a few mares at the Featherstone farm this spring. Mr. Gorey has just sent to John Nichols to be trained at the Kentucky Association: track a two-year-old colt by Previous out of Katherine Moore half-sister to Old Honesty, by Haminon. This one was highly tried last fall and looks a race horse all over. He ran a quarter in 23? at Latonia with 121 pounds up and ran the second eighth faster than the first, time by furlongs being 121 and lis.
