NORFOLK PATRONAGE GOOD LARGE CROWD IN ATTENDANCE AT RACES OF JAMESTOWN JOCKEY CLUB. ricasant Weather Plays Part in Increased Patronage Judgo Monck Wins Feature Race, in Which Sandhill, a Well Backed Favorite, Sulks. Norfolk, V;i., April 7. A large crowd took advantage of the springlike weather which prevailed here this afternoon to participate in the racing being held at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course. The program, although especially attractive, was made up of evenly balanced lields and in three instances the public lauded on the right ones. This llrst three races went to outsiders and then the favorites swept the rest of the card. Everything passed off smoothly and no further trouble is anticipated during the inciting. Speculation was exceedingly brisk, and when a few more layers arrive, business will iiii prove. Just now the prices are a bit tight, but under the circumstances this is to be expected. The track was good, although the footing close to the inner rail remained a bit soft. By tomorrow fast, track conditions should prevail and there probably will be a corrcsiKMiding improvement in the sport. Judge Monck beat a fair lot in the mile allowance race which was meant for a feature and in which .Sandhill was :i heavily backed favorite. In the early stages Judge Monck trailed the leaders, but he finished resolutely and won in handy fashion from Vreeland. .Sandhill seemingly sulked all the way and would not try. Aeademisr, winner of the sixth race, was looked upon as the best thing of the afternoon. He was backed from 2 to 1 to 4 to 5 and, after opening a lead of eight lengths, lasted to beat LAppelle by s three parts of a length. Jockey Jimmy Keid, who arrived from Juarez yesterday, left for New York tonight to close negotiations with II. 11. Duryea to go to France to ride. Keid received an offer this morning and was quick to accept. Among the visitors at Uie course this afternoon was William M. Mauley, president of the Maryland Jockey Club. W. M. Kerr, who races under the lioui tie course of. Mr. McMurtric, was also present. Jockey Adams has signed a contract to ride for Willie .Martin, lie will have the mount on The Whip in the lifth race tomorrow. W. C.
