NORFOLK CASES POSTPONED TRIAL OF CASES AGAINST RACING MEN DEFERRED UNTIL COMING SATURDAY. Prosecuting Attorney Fails to Put in An Appearance at Hour Scheduled for Beginning of Trials Business Goes on as Usual at the Track. Norfolk. Va., April 13. The Commonwealths Attorney failed to appear nt the Tanners Creek court-house tonight at the hour set for trial of the eases Arising out of-the indictments returned by the grand. I jury against .Manager Bob lscvy and various layers of odds at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs track. Consequently the trials were postponed until Saturday next. Business progressed in the usual fashion at the course tills afternoon, fifteen layers cutting in. The list of those under Indictment include J. U. Price, owner of the race track; Bob Levy, the lessee, and eight alleged layers. F. .Miller. W. liickey. Rod McMahon. W. Heck, J. Valentine, J. Rose, K. Slice-hail mid J. lliile. The fifteen layers that did business at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course this afternoon recouped wme of the losses that they had sustained during the early days of the meeting, when favorites and well-backed horses "were sweeping the card. Tactics, one of the two-year-olds that August Belmont is racing here, was the only favorite that made good during the afternoon; Tactics beat an ordinary lot in the first race, a dash of four and a half furlongs, for which lie was an eveii-mOney favorite. Dugau gave Tactics a splendid ride and also was of great help to. Golden Castle, which beat High Range a hose in the closing strides of the sixth race. For the first time since the meeting opened, the track was really fast. The improvement in the going was attended by a corresiondiug improvement iu the sintrt and the finishes were much closer than luring the past few days, when a majority of the winners had. wide margins to spare. Virginia and Maryland turfmen fared well, Raeewell, Golden Castle, Bendaga and Creston winning for them. The steeplechase found Octopus an easy winner. He was the "good thing" of the Tacc, being hacked from 1- to 1 to 0 to 1. Xebec, the favorite, was bothered by Croydon and Hawkwing, which galloped aruiiud the. course riderless. "Cresibir showed a good performance in the fourth race, which lie won in runaway fashion. He was heavily backed, but his margin over Acadcmist at the end was a matter of an iiich or two. Troxlers strong finish was largely responsible for Crestons victory. Prank Nolan, proprietor of the Beverwyck Stable, arrived today from the south. lie was at the cotirso early this morning inspecting the big string that trainer Dave "Woodford brought up from Jacksonville. .The horses of the Beverwyck Stable will be shipped from here to Piiulico and then to Canada, after which they will go to Saratoga if a meeting Should bo held there. Jack Atkin arrived today and probably will join the ranks of the layers doing business here. J. W. Garth sold Kaufman this afternoon to Martin Foley for 00.
