He was well within himself and appeared to have up his weight. Air. Long timed the trial and seemed pleased -with- it. Round the World, the first choice for the Derby, worked at a two-minute clip. Trainer Yanke says that as it lias been but aliout two weeks since the lillv won the Juarez Dcrhy slow work will do her more good than would a hard preparation. She is in perfect health and will be as fit us high-class training can make her on May 13. Other good works today included the following: Al Muller Five-eighths in 1:07, cantering. George Land will go to the same place with three horses, accompanied by jockey J. Deavenport. Among the jockeys who arrived today were A . Obert, under engagement with F. J. Pons, and P. Hufnagel, a free lance. Horesmeli are impressed with the two-year-olds bred in Illinois and trained by .lames Gritlin. While thev have not worked sensationally fast, they look like good racing material. All are by Hurst Park, a Castleton-bred. Mr. Grilliu has no two-year-olds this year by. Uncommon, -the sire of Czar. Uncommon has been sold to a northern Illinois breeder" and Mr. McCullough is mating all of his mares to Hurst Park and Czar. Miller Henderson is due here from Santa Anita Park with, fifteen horses raced by Henderson and Megan. The. stable of James McManus presumably will come at the same time. The A. D. Spreckels strliig will arrive Thursday. Trainer Raleigh Colston has the most pretentious string of race horses owned and managed by a colored turfmau since Drown Dick raced a big stable of his own" nearly a "decade ifgo. Colston has been a trainer since lie quit riding, over thirty years ago. but the present season is the first in which he lias owned all the horses in his training barn. The man who developed such horses as Montgomery. Fountalu-bluo, Waldo and Dorante has considerable- capital invested iu his present raciiig string, but he- is iiot doubtful of success. He made money for every man he has trained for and there seems to be no reason why he cannot do likewise with a string of horses of his own. Colston rode in the first Kentucky Derby and also iu another renewal of that race, but his mounts were poor performers upon both occasions and bo finished unplaced. He will always think that but for his charge going wrong on the eve of the race he would have won last season with Waldo, a colt he-was then training for C. L. Harrison. The improvements being made at Churchill Downs for the coining spring meeting are being rushed to completion. Several of the new pari-inutuel machines have already been set up. They are not movable, as wen! the old devices. They are being set up almost against the wall of the betting ring on the south side of the enclosure, which gives much more room in front of the machines. Horsemen seem to think the new devices will make a big hit with the racing public. There will be twenty-one of these devices in line on Derby day.
