TALK OF PARI-MUTUELS IN ENGLAND, It is said, in England that before this season is over the pari-niutuel will be started there. If the lale Charles Perkins had lived it would have been tried a few years since at Ilaydock Park, of which he was the leading spirit, and there was some discussion lately about the desirability of setting up a machine at Hurst Park, the management, however, coming to the conclusion that it would be unwise, cliielly because of the opposition of the ring. "Opinions are much divided 011 the subject of the pari-niutuel." says a London correspondent. "It amuses the little punter in France and elsewhere abroad, and doubtless would amuse him in England. Little punters, moreover constitute the vast majority of men who back horse: but biggers bettors would sicntly prefer the present system." Whatever suits tins vital: : majority of-iuen who back horses seems to be the very thing they ought to be given, and the big bettor is more frequently a detriment than an advantage to racing. These two considerations have formed part of the basis of the introduction of the system here. Toronto Globe.
