ENDURANCE STAKES FINANCES IN MUDDLE. Lexington, Ky.. August 2S. Secretary J. Pelham Johnston of the Kentucky State Racing Commission received a letter today from Barney Schreiber advising that he had taken no subscriptions to the Kentucky Endurance Stakes. While no answer has as yet been received from Wade McLemore. it is quite likely that his response will be like Mr. Schrci-lcrs, since the supposition that they might have each taken a subscription was based upon memoranda that was left by the missing secretary, W. E. Bid-well. It is regarded as quite certain now that there were no more than nineteen subscriptions. It develops that none of the Kentucky State Racing Commission members know the exact amount of Bidwells shortage in money that the commission will have to make up. Chairman E. F. Clay, after the meeting here last Wednesday, said that the amount of the missing secretarys shortage was so small that what was due Ihim in salary from the commission would cover it, and he said further that whatever Bidwell might be short was in sums that had been paid him for jockeys and trainers licenses. Chairman Clay, however, was speaking evidently only of what was apparent at the moment. After having checked up further, there is a possibility that a shortage will be found in the subscription fees to the Kentucky Endurance Stakes. It was required by the conditions of the stakes that 00 for each subscription be paid on June 1. Secretary Johnston said today that only six of the nineteen subscriptions had been accompanied by check or cash, as shown by the commission records and that the other thirteen subscribers have been requested to make known whether they sent money to Mr. Bidwell witli their subscription or whether he extended credit to them.
