CABMAN HITS THE LAYERS PROMINENT EASTERNER SCORES DOUBLE WITH TWO LONG SHOTS AT WINDSOR. With Stable Lad in the Saddle, Starbottle Wins at 15 to 1 and Question Hark at Odds Slightly Lower Two Runups Follow Selling Races. Windsor, Out., August 29. It. F. Carman put a crimp in the hank rolls of some of the layers at Windsor this afternoon by the victories of Starbottle and Question Mark, lie laid his plans well and despite the fact that other horses had shown brilliant speed in their trials succeeded in setting a good price against each of them. To help out on the odds he put one of his stable lads, Hoffman, in the saddle and the latter showed that he was far from being the incompetent rider that many supposed. On Starbottle Hoffman had a rough trip, being blocked and cut off several times. He found an opening on the rail entering the homestretch and was quick to take advantage of it. AVearing down the 1 to 5 favorite. Nimbus, in the homestretch Starbottle beat him half a length. On Question Mark Hoffman had only to sit steady, as the Carman racer opened a big lead and won by eight lengths. After Question Marks victory he changed owners. The race was a selling affair and the horse was entered at 5500. Albert Simons, in retaliation for the claiming of 0. M. Miller by Mr. Carman at Hamilton, advanced Question Mark to 00 and secured him at that figure. Montcalm, another of the afternoons winners, was also advanced, F. C. Piper, former owner of the horse, being responsible for the bidding. Ho made one bid of , which was a raise of 00. Montcalm was protected and lwught in. The feature race, a 00 handicap at one mile, proved easy for J. W. Schorrs Star Charter, which lK-at Busy in a canter. Cliff Elge nattered his backers by leading into the homestretch, but quit when challenged. Despite weather that was rather eool for this season of the year, a large crowd turned out. the attendance being even larger than on the opening -day. Thirty-two layers were in line and the brisk !usiness kept them all busy. T. J. Shaw and Frank Tyler suffered heavily from the victory . of, Star-iiiottlc.. Between them they lest close to 0,000 to the race. Some of the other layers figured Star-bottles chnuces equally as good as those of Nimbus and escaped the slaughter. Judges Price and Nelson, who are sticklers for clean riding, suspended a couple of jockeys for the remainder of the meeting. Taplin, who rode Clin Edge, and Loftus, who had the mount on Island Queen, were the offenders. Both rode roughly. Tapliu interfered with Fireman rounding the first turn, while Loftus bumped Camellia in rounding the far turn. Frank Taylor is endeavoring to secure a contract on jockey T. Rice for the II. G. Ilallenbeck stable for the Kentucky meetings. Bookmaker John Wolff, who was employed by Chambers and Walker on the Canadian circuit for a number of seasons, was a visitor here today after an absence of a couple of years. He has been booking at Butte. Demoness, which was sent out in the entries in the first nice, was not programmed. The conditions called for Canadian-breds, which made Demoness ineligible. William Garth received a telegram from S. C. Hildreth Instructing him to ship the horses he left here to Sheepshead Bay on Monday next. They will be sold with the rest of the Hildreth horses which are now at the Bay. J. O. Holder and W. C. Westmoreland will ship their stables from here to Laurel at the conclusion of the Windsor meeting. They will be the first horsemen to ship to the new track. Secretary McLennan announced that the stake and program books would be out September 1. Futurity, a two-year-old in the Wilson stable, that started for the first time this afternoon, attracted much attention in his paddock parade. The colt is an extra good looker and in his race today showed a good turn of speed for live furlongs.
