RICHARD CROKER ADVOCATES PARI-MUTUELS. Dublin, Ire., August 29. Richard Crokcr. formerly of New York, in an interview in which he speaks enthusiastically of raeing.-comes out in favor of the pari-uiutuel systeip on the tracks in America. He said: "Of rourse I know that when one says a word for horse racing he will be accused of being an ally of the bookmakers. Well, then, why not . in the place of bookmaking establish something like the pari-mutuel system under state supervision, deducting enough from the takings to pay the employees and assist in the development of the breeding industry V "Purists to the contrary, men will bet whether there is horse racing or not, and if horse racing is restored and the uiutuel system inaugurated, I feel that the ground will be cut from under the narrow-minded persons who. using the liookmakers as a club, destroyed a health-giving sport, crippled the great industry of horse breeding and threw thousands out of work." New York. August 29. Commenting on the suggestion of Richard Croker for legislation at Albany that will permit pari-mutuel hotting on the New York tracks, the Sun says: "When pari-mutuels were tried at Brighton Beach years ago, the courts ruled that sueli methods violated the lottery law. Individual betting without professional bookmaking is believed to bo the only salvation of the turf in this state. If the Gittins bill becomes a law it will not permit bookmaking in any form, and the courts must be asked to pass on the legality of private wagering."
