PIMLICO WINNERS ARE WELL BACKED. Three Purses Taken By Favorites Ideal Conditions Prevail, But Attendance Is Light. Baltimore, Md., October 9. Well backed horses won a majority of the nurses at Pimlico tills afternoon. Castania, Ringmaster and Amain were favorites in their races, while two of the other winners, Bounder and Sotemia, did not lack for support. Despite racing conditions that were the next thing to perfect, the attendance was light. The opening race, a dash of five and a half furlongs for two-year-olds, furnished the best contest of the afternoon, the finish resulting in a hard stretch drive in which Garry just managed to get up to win by a head from Miss Wiggs. William Gartli showed up a likely jumper in the steeplechase in Ringmaster, which won with ease. Ringmaster is a three-year-old and he was making his maiden effort through the field this afternoon. He made practically all of his own pace and had a big margin to spare over Lampblack and only three of the seven starters finished. The Oriole Handicap, the feature of the program, uroved easv for Sotemia. The race was run to suit her, McCahey. on Owannx, and E. Dugan, on CHIT Edge, taking their mounts under stout restraint for the first seven furlongs. It practically .resolved itself into a sprint through the homestretch and when Schuttinger moved up with Sotemia, he mot with little opposition from the others and drew away into an easy lead at the finish. Jockey C. H. Shilling rode wo or the afternoons winners Castania and Bounder. Schuttinger also piloted two. Garry and Sotemia. Fred Brew and jockey J. Mclntyre were among the new arrivals. They came from Spokane, where the latter has been riding as a rree ianee. Jockey Deverich, who has been riding in South America, was also an arrival. Deverich formerly rode for J. W. ONeill. lie will remain in this country during the winter months and then will return to Peru. Deverich reports that a majority of the horses racing iu that country are American thoroughbreds. The stake blanks of the Jamestown meeting were distributed this afternoon and all of the prominent horsemen here were liberal in their entries. Roebuck, starter in the sixth race, ran in the colors of E. E. MeCargo, who purchased the colt of Mrs. Livingston this morning. Recent work-outs at Pimlico: Barney Igoe Half mile in 541.
