LAUREL PATRONAGE CONTINUES GOOD. Laurel, Md., October 9. The Maryland State Fail-Association today entered on the second week of its meeting. It was Ladies Day, and the members of the fair sex turned out iu such large numbers that the largest crowd of the meeting was present, the grand stand being packed. Helen Barbee was the only successful favorite, but several well-backed horses were returned winners. Two more books drew in. making nineteen in all. The newcomers were Leo Swatts. who has not booked In quite a time, and Harry Block. The handicap at one mile was the lays feature, and it was won by P. S. P. Randolphs Racquet. Bob R. was the best horse in the race and his showing bordered on the sensational. When the start was made. Bob R. propped and for that reason was virtually left at the post. He did not appear to have a "chance,, but Forehand sent him along and he gradually made up some of the lost ground and fin ished in" second place. Had the distance been a little greater, he would have been returned the winner, as he was running much faster than Racquet at the end. Racquet set the pace all the way and just lasted to win by three parts of a length. The halter men were active during the day and it cost the owners of Miss Jonah and ltlleweiss S303 to retain their racers after they had won. There was to have been-a novelty race on the program today, but it was postponed until Wednesday. The Ladies Day was such a success that the man agement decided to have another next Friday. William Oliver, who trains the horses of Dr. J. S. Tyree of Washington, has decided to transfer his horses from Pimlico to Laurel to race. . Ilaks King of Yolo died at the track this morning. J. W. Hedrick has returned Dnllcare to his former owner, O. F. Fleischmann, at an advance over the horses cost wjieu he took him from a selling race. J. P. Robie arrived today with two steeplechasers. 11. G. Bedwell, Ed. Trotter and Nat Byer were among thosu who witnessed the racing today. Mr. Bedwells horses are expected to reach here tonight from Kentucky.
